How do you guys re-filter hydraulic oil?. Couple of times in the past I had to put slightly used hydraulic oil back into the tractor. I used couple layers of cheese cloth into another clean container before filling the tractor. But it seems like I should be using something with a finer strain. What you think?

Depending upon how often you filter you could buy spin on hydraulic filters and make up your own pump. Or a big wide funnel and 6 layers of our old best white T shirts.

Would a paint strainer work ? I think automotive paint suppliers have a couple of different mesh sizes .

I would not do it personally. We get hydro oil in 5 gallon pales for $23. A pump for my cheapest tractor is $600. Not worth it to me.

I don't know where to get 5 gl. of fluid for $23. The cheapest I came up locally is around $42. I think Craig's 6 T shirts method maybe a practical solution for me. I just hope this process wouldn't be painfully slow.
Thanks for the inputs.

You need a Rural King. They have it on sale every week for the last 5 years for this price.

I wish we had a Rural King here. I'm going to write to the corporate office and suggest to put a store in Fayetteville NC. Thank you.

X2!!!!...
It CAN be done, but you need a hydraulic spin-on filter, pump, clean container to pump into.
We actually re-use our engine dyno oil. But it is pumped into a sealed storage container from the engine. Then pumped back thru a two stage filtering system that filters down to engine oil filter spec.
Engine oil samples are taken on all engines before the oil is pumped back into the storage tank.

only a few times I've reused hyd oil.. one was when i had just serviced a ford and then found a loose 3pt lower link pin.. had to pull pto shaft to fix. oil literally had no time on it. I drained it back into it's oil pail it came out of a few hours before and used a paint strainer to do so..

otherwise.. if the oil is older.. i'd dump. when it comes out it brings whatever is onthe bottom of the sump.. that's usually metal or grit, unless you started with a clean sump.

ps.. my sump had been clenaed and flushed as part of the work i did on her.. i just missed tightening one castle nut :) oops!
