I wanted to buy a cheap 8' backblade for my J.D. 850 4WD tractor. Farm Family/Central Tractor had them on sale for $299.00.last spring. At that price I bought all 3 of them. One for my brother, son and I. We have a J.D. 850, 950, and 1050 between us. Well I used mine for the lst time this week in snow and 10 minutes of use and it broke. The main pin which attaches the frame to the blade snapped. My son told me this same thing happened to him after 1 hour use. And at dinner yesterday, my brother told me too he was grading last spring some gravel and his frame broke away from the blade at the same place. Well, 3 blades with 25 to 35 hp tractors didn last an hour each... You obviously get what you pay for (sometimes). The manufacturer plate on all 3 says Howse Manuf. Co. - You think that Quality Farm Family, (the new poeple that took over the previous company last year) want to hear a word about 3 blades that were purchased last year? For my money Ill stay with Landpride. You pay about 75% more for the price, but never had a problem.

If you are going to buy another box blade I can recommend the Tufline brand. I do not know if they are available in your area but go to their web site http://www.monroetufline.com and send them an email to find where there dealers are located. You can see the specs for their box blades here also.

A few years ago, I had similar luck with two box blades I bought at Tractor Supply Co. Welds broke within a couple of hours. I think they simply got a batch with inadequate welds. However, the folks at Tractor Supply Co. gave me the choice of exchanging for another new blade, having it welded and give them the receipt and they'd pay it, weld it myself and they'd pay me, or give my money back. The first time, I tried a second blade. The second time I took the refund and bought a Monroe Tufline blade; a much stronger, heavier blade. However, I can't complain about Tractor Supply Co. (and I still do business with them) because they were willing to do whatever it took to make it right.

My wifes' stepfather bought what they call a economy blade from CT. It was painted red. Tried to pull a beaver dam apart with it on his 2120 and twisted the 3-point frame like pretzal. They claim 35 hp rated but I have to wonder if thats just because they use category 1 pins. I've been beating on one from there labeled Farm Star Equipment EB-6(Litchfield Ill.)with my 20hp. So far the only damage has been a bent pin which has been acceptable. You get what you pay for. As for top quality blades BUSH HOG makes some fine stuff. Thats what replaced the bent one. Top notch. Oh yea, when I got my blade the first one they tried to load fell off the forklift and came crashing down 5ft on to the blacktop parking lot. I wonder what they did with that blade.

I bought a 5' blade from TSC a couple of years ago (under $200) for use with a Kubota B7100, which is only a 16/17 hp diesel. Doesn't create the same torque situations that a more powerful tractor would. The blade's been fine for my use....grading and snow plowing, although I'd be hesitant to use it on a larger tractor. With a more powerful machine, a heavy duty blade is definitely needed.

Had the same problem last spring with the TSC box blade as Bird had. First time use did the 3 point frame pretzel trick. Since the blade was a few months old before the first use I didn't return it to TSC. Instead had it rewelded in several spots & extra iron added to the frame. Have since had to replace bent pins & had additional welding done. While I originally thought it was me that caused the breakage it was actually me purchasing "at a good price" something that wasn't up to my needs.
While I'm at it Bird I took your advice on the 3-point finishing mower - Bush Hog 6' rear discharge - last summer and have found it to be an excellent piece of equipment. Thanks for your input!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Of course totaly unknown to you until now! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I said in another post that I picked up a really light-weight (like, <150lbs) used backblade last year specifically to move snow. Wound up getting a snowblower, but I'm going to keep the blade around for moving brush and loose gravel - no digging. The label on the blade specifically stated that using it on a tractor over 20HP would void the warranty ... of course, the warranty was long gone /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif anyhow.

Glad you like that mower, goble. I've sure been happy with mine. And no way you'd be related to George, I guess; sure used to enjoy his TV program./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
