New Holland WorkMaster 55
I have a New Holland Workmaster 55 and am looking for a very good plow to buy for it . Have never plowed before and want this to be as painless as possible......what would you recommend as a sweetheart plow ? Thank you in advance for your time .

There are two kinds of plows for compact tractors.

Moldboard plow is the "classic" turning plow. They are available with 1, 2, or 3 "bottoms" for compact tractors.

Disc Plow (which is NOT a Disc Harrow) is for opening particularly rocky or root infested ground.

How much ground do you have to plow? Rocks? Is your ground level? Has ground been "opened" by a plow in the past?

Learning to adjust a moldboard plow takes time. Plowing is satisfying but if you expect it to be painless I am afraid you need to recalibrate your expectations.

There should be plenty of used plows in rural New York. It is difficult to find replacement wear parts for moldboard plows, so seek one in good shape, not junk.

Used plows are listed on eBay regularly. Ken Sweet, Sweet Tractor in Kentucky, often has re-furbished plows on eBay. I buy from Ken. Excellent quality which you pay a good price for.

Plowing is a late Fall/early Winter task so you are researching at the appropriate time.

The first type of plow you should look at is a 3-5 shank chisel plow, it's the easiest plow to run by a long stretch and your tractor could handle one. It also does the best job of fracturing the ground to promote root growth. I would stay away from old moldboard plows, parts can be difficult to find. Everybody I know, big or small are using chisel plows.

Also the optimum time for tillage is just prior to planting. Water and wind erosion can raise havoc on a field laying fallow all fall, winter and early spring. Any time I turn the ground in the fall it's because I'm planting some sort of "green manure" (clover etc) to till in prior to planting in the spring. It adds to the nitrogen in your soil and saves on fertilizer costs.

The plow in my avatar is for sale. 2 furrow, two way Ford Series 102. All new wear parts except the moldboards themselves. I pulled it with my 32 hp Kubota and with my 59 hp Kubota. It would work well with your tractor. It's a long way from me to you though.

PS, you need one hydraulic remote to roll it over.
