There has been an old restaurant in this area for decades. Some realtives of mine lived right across the road from it. About a week to week and a half ago, an excavator showed up and started the demo. The building itself sat unused for quite a few years. There have been rumors here and there about using it again, but they never came to fruition. The first photos were taken by a relative of mine on her camera. I wish I could have been there when they started but couldn't. The videos, as well, were taken on her camera. Some of the photos taken were from the second floor of her house. I was over there yesterday and grabbed some pics with my new digital camera.

When they first started the demo, they started at the rear of the building and worked their way forward.

Sometimes we're lucky; owners will let the Fire Department fo in and train in buildings like that. We get to do searches, hose lays, break open doors. It's more fun when we get to burn them. Not just because of the fire, but because of the opportunity to train in a controlled environment.

A "Safeway" grocerey store out here was demo'ed in prep for a new expanded store. We did not get to burn, but used a smoke machine to mimic conditions, did building searches, cut open doors etc.

Unfortunately burning is not a good option any more. Many landfills will not accept burned debris because they assume it might contain toxics or asbestos, so you have to haul the debris to a toxic waste dump. That's big $$$$.

Some areas still allow, but before you dig yourself into a big hole by burning a structure, check with your local landfill representative.

Fun pictures Jay, thanks. Any idea why they demo'd it? Unless they are planning something else, it sure seems cheaper to let it rot away on it's own. One of the pics shows some earth berm construction in the background. Perhaps across the street? Is there other development in the area.

Gotta be a fun way to make a living, eh? I'll bet the cab of that Komatsu is a mighty relaxing place...

I'm not sure why they demo'd it. I think they may put a house in that spot, but I don't know.

That is a hill in the background. No construction. On top of the hill is a farmer's field. That hill can be nasty during winter storms. It can create huge snow drifts. It's not as bad as years ago, but it can still create a mess.

I would have tried to take better photos, but it was a whopping 11 degrees that day (with a light wind) and I just wanted to get back to some warmth.

We took video a few years ago of a 100-yr. old farm house where we lived and rehab'd for 13 yrs. It was damaged by fire by idiots we sold it to on contract -- long story. Anyway, the video is in a format I haven't been able to convert to digital yet. The neat thing, the roof we worked on for months, down to the wood lathes, collapsed in one big piece, held together real nice.
It was kinda emotional watching it, like the death of a family member or something. Had old solid oak timbers, hand-made nails in places, had stood through a tornado, was where my kids grew up. I'm sure glad we got the video. Anybody have any tips on converting old analog video?
