Retirement thoughts Past Present Future

I am thankful for Social Security and learning what I did when I did. Cuz my Social Security now check is three times what it would have been if I had retired at age 62 ...
As I said a few pages back, it's worthwhile for anyone to get financial planning software to plan for retirement.

Social Security's formulas are part of the software so you don't need to research that separately (and risk overlooking something).

As you note, some planning effort can pay big dividends.

I did the same with employer matching retirement funds. Never took a raise until I capped.
I only see my raises when I get overtime. My take-home pay for a straight 40-hour week hasn't changed in 12 years. I have my 401k deductions automatically raised each year around the same time my annual raise kicks in.

Perfect. I won't have to worry about you when retirement time comes. (y)

A friend of mine came very close to death because he never took care of his teeth. Infection got into his blood. Healthy teeth, healthy body.

Side story. 3 years ago I got infection behind my last jaw tooth on the right side. Went to the Dentist and he took a better xray, rather than the simple ones they use. He found my wisdom tooth buried in my jaw bone. It had never came to the surface. Infection got down in there from having my teeth cleaned, which I do twice a year.

Went to a specialist. Requires major surgery to remove. 90% chance they'll break my jaw bone. If so they would graft a bone from my leg and rebuild the jaw bone. Had a scheduled surgery. Covid hit. Surgery canceled. I've just left it alone. It's been there for decades. My hygienist just don't dig around behind that last tooth. No problems.

Now that I know what I'm poking around for, I can put my finger on it under my jaw bone. Makes me think I'm going to throw up. No return of infection.

My Dental Hygienist says I'm special. I tell her she is too. :)

I had 3 wisdom teeth removed that were impacted and never came to the surface. Two looked like your x-ray. The third was actually growing sideways. Getting them removed wasn't too bad. I was actually awake for it since the knockout gas makes me really sick.

They gave me a big chill pill and a local. Then proceeded to remove them. Took about 1 hour. They sliced the gum, drilled around them with a diegrinder. Then they pulled them. Felt some pressure while they were being pulled.

Not sure what they gave me for the chill pill, but they could have hit me with a hammer, and I would have laughed at them. I was a grizzly bear when I came down from that pill, though.

Hopefully you've not had any lingering effects!!!

Any particular recommendations of planning software?

All the best, Peter

I bought Quicken's forecasting and retirement planning software in 1996 or 97 after my savings had suddenly surged ~30% in a year and I started wondering if I could retire early. 1998, similar increase! So I retired summer 1998, age 54. Best decision I ever made.

Here's Quicken's present product 25 years later. I have no idea if it is still the best available.

My friend does 100% up to 5%. He calls it a 5% raise.
Wife and I have always put 15% of our income into 401K or IRA depending on employment and when they became available for us to participate in. Couple that with we both had pensions at that same time. Both pensions got froze, but we double invested up until then. Sometimes our employers matched as much as 100% up to 10%. Sometimes they did no matching. But we kept buying shares and just pretended that we made 15% less than we did.

IRA's don't get the employee matching. But still a great way to save. As soon as it was available, we converted them to ROTH. Now that we're both over 59.5 we could pull from those if we needed them penalty free. And no taxes, since it's already paid on a ROTH.

Some folks that have young children should consider 529 college savings plans, but compare advantages and disadvantages of the 529 VS the ROTH IRA.

We have a 12% defined 401k contribution… I place another 9% which brings me to my personal contribution max. The wife and I both max our IRAs, and HSA contributions. I’m inclined to spend the rest… I don’t… but I become more inclined each year 😂
