Has anyone tried replacing the cable on your ATV winch with a rope? I think the 50' of cable that comes on the spool is a little short. Maybe the rope would allow 100' on the spool.

i think it would be the exact opposite. you would fit less rope on the drum than cable because in order to find rope strong enough to match the cable strength it would have to be much larger diameter

I've reading about winch rope. The general statement is that the rope is about 30% stronger than normal wire rope. Check out this url for Amsteel blue
If the rope IS actually 30% stronger, then the wire rope could be replaced with a smaller diameter rope.

My thoughts for using rope with a high tensile strength, is to reduce the size and get more line on the winch. I recently sold a Mule that I had installed a pickup winch with 150' of 5/16" cable. It was an overkill for the Mule, but the 150' line came in handy.
It seems that 50' is a little short, especially if I went through a snatch block and back to the RTV for more pulling power.
Anyone ever try the winch rope?
Have you found that the 50' line is adequate?
Thanks for your comments.

I used it on my old ATV was able to put about 60-75 ' of wire rope to the 50' cable. very strong. easy on the hands. would stay on spool evenly, etc... all around better.

I've been looking at a Warn or Ramsey winch for my truck and later for other stuff (gator, etc), and the cost of winch quality "rope" is phenomenal. Is what you are looking at reasonable? Maybe my dealer wants to take me for a ride. How does it compare to wire?

Synthetic winch cable is already out there, works great according to most. Stonger than a equivalent diameter steel cable, but it does have it's own set of issues.

Take a look at Amsteel Blue Winch Rope.

I eventually bought an additional 50' of aircraft cable. I put an eye on one end and a hook on the other. I just keep this rolled up in the back in case I ever run into a problem of not enough cable. If needed, I would just add the extra cable to the front end of the winch line.

Has anyone actually figured out where to buy 60 or 70 feet of this stuff and how much would it cost?
