Hi all, hopefully this is the right place to ask, but would it be possible to convert a tiller to belt driven? Ie rip the motor off (cirlcled in red) and either add a pully ontop or add a larger engine? A mate of mine gave me one that had the engine knocked out, and I'm thinking of running it either off of an old riding lawnmower (the pulley sticks out the back) or just putting on a small push mower engine, so would this be possible? Or a horrible idea likely to result in death. Cost and hours are no concern, seeing as I would moreso want to attempt than be useful

You can do anything you want, it will just take a little time and money.

There is always a brek even point where it's cheaper and faster to buy a new disposable tiller

Sadly in Australia, the best we have is either namebrand (a hasquvarna is 3-4K) and the cheap Chinese tillers break really often, to the point my mate sent me his because the engine broke in 30ish hours, but it's good to know it's atleast somewhat possible, thanks mate

Would that small tiller survive the weight and torque of a larger motor? I have a Mantis brand tiller similar to your picture and the drive - tiller assembly is not very heavy duty.

Weight most definitely, as the pulley should weigh less than the engine. But torque is what concerns me quite alot, since best case scenario something breaks. Worst case something breaks and hits me

You could surely add a pulley and a motor. You will also need a clutch. I think though that balance will be an issue. The existing configuration has the motor directly above the drive unit input. A belt drive will have the motor offset by at least the average diameter of the two pulleys, plus a little extra. And the pulleys should be fairly large, say 75 to 100 mm diameter in order for the belt to grip. For example, if you were to use 100mm diameter pulleys the motor would need to be offset by at least 125mm from the position of the original motor. That offset, depending on the direction, would either tilt the tiller forward or backward or would put more weight on one side or the other.

A tiller has a remarkable affiliation with a snow blower. Why not take a garden tractor single stage snow blower and replace the auger with tiller sections and cut back the rear panels ?
