I bought an RTV 900 minus the engine. It appears that I need a D902 to repower it. Are there any other options? Has anyone imported an engine from Alibaba? Seems this unit is small enough to be exempt from most EPA regulations. I'm sure any decent freight forwarder could get it here without issue. Are there any decent suppliers state side? How about swapping with a different motor? Who has tried a gasoline v-twin swap?

Have you checked new or rebuildable D902 engines on the eBay?

Several are listed there.

They are using the 1105 in newer models, and it's still under powered. But I think they wanted to stay below 25hp to avoid emissions requirements.

I think the RTVs really need 40-50hp. What I don't know is how well the HST would handle the additional power.

I have check ebay for D902 engines. They are very expensive, even for a "rebuild-able" used option. I could put two much larger engines in my car for the same price as one D902.

I believe Hayden is right about 25HP being the max because of emissions regulations. I don't know what the HST can handle, either. I was thinking about slapping a Harbor Freight Predator 670 in there and calling it good. The other viable option is to import a D902 from China. I can ship a freshly rebuild one with all new accessories on it to Missouri for a third of the price local US sellers are quoting me. That includes taxes!

The one thing making me second guess the HF Predator 670 is the heater for the cab and cooling the hydraulic oil for the HST. I would have to rig up an oil cooler with an electric fan and add a second small oil cooler to the same loop to use as the heater core in the cab, or something like that...

I would try to fit a bigger diesel. One retrofit people do on the newer D1105 engine is to add a turbo. There is a factory variant of that engine with a turbo, so it's mimicking that. HP goes from 25 up to the low to mid 30s. I'm seriously thinking about doing it now that my X1140 is out of warranty.

I could do this 999cc 35hp v-twin and it's still cheaper than a China Kubota rebuild. I would like to stick with diesel for the convenience of shared fuel with my other equipment and reliability, but the expense is unbelievable for what you get. I could get a 1000cc side by side motor for less than the piddly little Kubota.

I think choice between under 1000 cc non-turbo Diesel or gasoline replacement all depends what you will use the RTV for.

Is it going to be a workhorse type of a long term ownership "tool", or is it going to be used mostly for recreation & fun, until you find something that's even more fun?

Definitely a workhorse. My property has lots of hills and varying terrain. I don't care if it's fast, as long as the power steering and brakes work good and it can carry tools and materials up and down the slopes.
