It was sunning itself on the road near my farm. Not sure what kind it was as it turned and scooted off the road faster than I have ever seen a snake move as I drove by.
I don't even like snakes driving by at 30 mph. ;o{

My wife and I saw a dead rattler about 2' long on the road about two weeks ago. I suspect it crawled out there at night for the warmth of the road and got sent to snake heaven by a passing car.

Copperheads came out this week in Missouri. Saw my first by the RR tracks mushroom hunting saturday.
Keeping an eye on the woodshed. Last year I caught one 43 7/8" long (yes a copperhead). New Missouri state record from what I've seen posted.
Hope I don't find her grandma this year!
I carry an old golf club with a hook on the end in my truck and SUV and when I find snakes on the road, I move them. Same around the farm. Non-poisonous, I move to the garden. Venomous, I take down to the creek and release.
Just another critter, no need to kill them, they have a real place in the scheme of things.

I don't handle snakes but will kill the poisonous ones at the homestead. I have Dogs at home and don't want a vet bill. Also guests, sometimes with kids, wander the property and may not be paying proper attention.

Well, I saw my first snake of the year last week. It was a pretty good sized Copperhead, about 3 ft long. I was digging up some topsoil next to my garden. It had gotten late and I put the tractor up and walked back to the pile of dirt. There sitting on the pile was this Copperhead. At first I was going to just let it go, but SWMBO came out and insisted I dispatch it immediately! I hacked it's head off but then started feeling bad. I normally won't kill even a poisonous snake unless there is an imminent danger of persons or pets.

BTW, has anyone ever heard of burning snakes to keep others away? Years ago, my grandparents swore by this method and my parents too. My dad would search out a snake (any snake) early in the spring and build a small brush pile just to burn the snake. It actually seemed to work too.
