Seeing spots in front of my eyes

My grandson caught a 3'+ speckled kingsnake this morning. It was up next to the house beside a flowerbed and crawled into the flowerbed to hide. He fished it out with one of those long pickup tools.

He wanted to keep it around, but I told him it was a very good snake that kept down the population of rodents/bugs. The longer he played with it, the more stress it would be on the snake. I let him keep it for about 1/2 hour then turn it loose in the woods. He was really good with the snake and tried to not hurt it. I was sure proud of the way he reacted to it.

I'm thinking they call it a Kingsnake because it eats other snakes incl. venomeous ones. ..russ

Loved the pictures, and so happy to see somebody who treats snakes with proper care and respect. So many people think any and all snakes are harmful and their first thought is to kill them. Makes me sad that people are so narrow minded. Probably 98% of the time, a snake is more afraid of you than you are of it.

Glad to see he was showing it some respect..Due to their controling other snakes..Kingsnakes are very much in demand around here, Now if i could just train it to eat Moles??

For a snake lover, like yourself, here's my snake story. About a year ago last week we had a very strong atmospheric pressure change from high to very low which resulted in a storm that washed out parts of the lane and filled the pond to overflowing. The afternoon just prior to the event we saw this black rat snake heading for cover under our back deck followed by 4 other guys just like him coming at us in unison.
The only poisonous snake common to this area is the copperhead and we have lots of those. On rare occassion a timbler rattler ventures into the area but I have never seen one, and don't care too. We still have to be careful where we step.
Rodents and bugs are another story.
