Had an interesting conversation today. Went to a local gun shop looking for a 'cheap' used 38 or 9mm to pop snakes or rats while on my tractor. (See hear now, this is about tractors). The young lady who waited on me was very well informed about arms and ammunition. Said she and her husband had spent their entire lives working in the industry. Has taught concealed carry classes for several years and competes regularly in several types of firearms competitions. Thought some of what she told me might be interesting to y'all especially since it lines up with what I've been told from other sources. Don't flame me for any of this, I don't know if it's true or not but here goes.

She said to NEVER have trigger work done on a carry pistol. Said that if you did have trigger work done and were involved in a justified shooting, the lawyer for the person you shot would be 100% guaranteed to win in any lawsuit against you. Even if the person was breaking into your house and fired first at you. I said what the he11 and she just said you will have to take my word for it. Said they had seen it happen before. Lawyer telling the jury that the person with the tuned trigger was looking to shoot somebody. Same thing my CCL instructor said a couple years ago. Unbelievable!

She said to never load a carry handgun with ammunition with a name like Zombie Killer, Ripper, or other aggressive sounding names. Said a lawyer would use that against you. Said to have ammo with Defense in the name. Her husband walked by about that time with another customer and said something about I had 'better listen to her'. So I got home and went to the MidwayUSA website and sure enough, most of their self defense ammo has defense somewhere in the name. No matter what the brand, ammo that is marketed for self defense and concealed carry has the word "Defense" in the name. She said they had been involved in court cases in another state that didn't turn out well because of the name of the ammo. Didn't matter if the only difference was the ink on the box.

Now I find that hard to believe but as I said earlier I am repeating what I was told.

She said that they had to open carry because of their business but that they strongly advised people they train to not do so in public. Said it made people uneasy and uneasy people vote for extremely restrictive gun laws. She said that people who "flaunt" the fact that they are armed in stores and such are trying to prove something and show off. If they are involved in a shooting they will probably loose in court BECAUSE the lawyers will say they shot somebody because they were trying to prove something and the fact that they were open carrying a weapon in public proved the fact. And, she said, if somebody robs the place and you are open carrying they will shoot you first.

Said they had a customer that they had trained come in a couple weeks ago with his son and daughter telling this story. The man and his family were leaving a restaurant and a guy stopped him and asked him how he would like his ***** whipped. The aggressor was drunk or doped up and the guy did not know him. Kept trying to walk away and the man followed mouthing. The aggressor then insulted the man's wife or daughter or something and the event (in her words) escalated. The aggressor was threatening more than a fight by that time but had not pulled a gun or knife. Her friend had his hand on his weapon and was trying to get the confrontation away from his family. But his wife would not listen. He would push her back and try to get away from his family so if the dopehead pulled a pistol they would be out of the line of fire. His wife would come up and grab his right arm blocking him from getting his weapon out. He would push her back and she would come right back and grab him. The daughter realized what was going on and grabbed her mother BY THE HAIR and pulled her away and to their car. Somebody who knew the aggressor came up and started trying to calm him down and the guy ended up on the ground with a couple of his friends holding him. The guy with his family left the scene at that point. She said that when they got home there was a "come to Jesus" meeting which consisted of him and his daughter screaming at the wife. Said they were going to mention this in classes to tell trainees to instruct family to clear out if an 'event' was taking place.

Other gems from this young lady was that they have heard the FBI is going back to 9mm. Said ammo so much better than twenty years ago that a 9mm would suffice in most situations and the increased capacity would be well worth the change.

Said a Ruger exec that they compete with told them that something will be announced shortly that will either replace the LCP or complement it.

Said the Marines and Army were changing to a hollow point bullet in all their ammo.

Said women were the most common victim in violent crime and she tried to get every woman she could to arm themselves.

Said they had a three year goal for their little hole-in-the-wall gun shop. And they met in in ten months. On Black Friday, she said they didn't have time to go pee.

Anyway, I spent a half hour or more talking to her and she was very knowledgeable about firearms, shooting, and the law. Or maybe it seemed so because I'm not.

Once again don't flame me, I'm only repeating what I was told.

Thanks for the post - good information to know. I've always thought the "zombie" ammo was a bad idea from the ammo companies. They ought know better than resorting to nonsense to sell more product.

The lady has provided some very god advice...I hope you heed it. I definitely agree with her comment about trigger work. Keep the tricked out gun for the range. If one gets into a situation where the gun has to be pulled, one doesn't want an accidental discharge due to a combination of stress and a lightened trigger.

If one spends much time on firearms forums, you read a lot of internet Rambo posts. These are the guys that buy the "zombie" ammo. Me, with a carry gun, I most frequently use Hornady Critical Defense ammo. It has nothing to do with the name, BTW. It has a bullet design that feeds extremely well in a semi-auto. I also prefer frangible ammo in a carry gun since that lessens any chance of doing harm if the round goes beyond the target.

I'm going to add one more bit of wisdom....never say anything about shooting to kill. If one must shoot, one shoots to stop an assailant.

the funny thing is the critical defense and the Zombie load are the same with a different colored tip. I agree with the trigger work, because you don't want a light trigger on a gun that you will be operating in a heightened stress level. too much risk of stress induced muscle twitches. Now if you ask people to provide actually court cases where it has gotten people convicted you wouldn't find any.

The best thing to do if you don't know what ammo to use a defense carry pistol is go ask your local police what ammo they carry, and then load that in your firearm.

I've heard the trigger thing before, but when I heard it, it was that any performance modification to the weapon was not a good idea.

Yep, good common sense advice. And like RoyJackson, I have the Hornady Critical Defense ammo in both my 9mm SigSauer and my .38 special S&W revolver.

One other thing a local gun shop owner teaches in his CHL classes is that, if you ever shoot anyone, even if you're sure you're right, you may very well be arrested initially until the investigation is complete and the prosecuting attorney decides whether or not to charge you with any offense. And there are insurance policies available that will provide bail and an attorney initially, if you wish to buy such.

Another Hornady critical defense user here also. The only thing in your entire post that was questionable in my mind was the military switching to hollowpoint ammo. I understand some is used, but as far as I know it is still against treaty.

Everything else sounds spot on to me, including the FBI switching back to 9mm for the reasons given. Go back to that gun shop, she knows what she is talking about.
