depending on where you live and the local laws. On my last new system. a member form the local board of health and the design engineer had to laser transit the field and pipe when I was done. It is level for disbursement purposes and if not totally level, one area will get saturated in a hurry (one or two pipes dipping downward instead of level) and this will prematurely ruin the system again... Level it has to be..

sounds to me you leach field has gone south, anything you do is just a temp repair. I would suggest you bite the bullet and have a new one installed by a PRO. 3 years ago i had one installed, and glad i did. nothing worse than getting up on a cold JAN. DAY AND THE TOILET WON'T WORK. I wouldn't be replacing the pipe from the tank to the D-box. Just the field. So would this still be a problem?

Once I have dug out the old field, how can I make certain that my new bed is exactly at the same height as the old one? Can I just put the D-box in line with the pipe comming from the tank and level everything from there?

yes.Your drainfeild and D box shouldbe levelwith each other. The line comming from your tank will have a slope to the d box.
You can rent a rotary laser pretty cheap and that will ensure everything is level.
