I wear mine just to move it 10 feet, if I'm on unfamiliar ground.

I frequently don't wear it when I'm just grading my road. When finish mowing on relatively flat ground that got mowed frequently, I might not. But bush-hogging pretty much anywhere, I would. Let's not forget the sad experience farmer who got killed by falling off his tractor trying to fend off a swarm of bees whose nest he ran over with the bush-hog.

What I mow, I have been mowing for almost 10 years, very familiar. I plan to buy a rotary this summer to cut down my field and I would definitely wear it cutting through there, like you said, unfamiliar ground.

Its a habit to buckle the belt I don't even realize I'm doing it. I wear my belt 90% of the time the other 10% I'm in the danger zone---no one is perfect.

Mark, I guess you know that was a commonly used reason many people gave for not wearing seat belts in cars; afraid they might run off a bridge or something into the water someday and didn't want to be trapped. But of course, if you don't have a belt on and get knocked unconscious . . .. Oh well, we can all think of excuses not to do the things we don't want to do anyway./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt in the car/truck! Started wearing it even before it was the law. If you need to wear it while mowing, why don't all riders have them?

JimBinMi, I guess we're all creatures of habit, and I figure if I start deciding not to wear the seat belt when I'm confident that I don't need it, then I might forget to put it on when I do need it. And of course, being a creature of habit who has worn seat belts consistently in cars since 1962, it's such a habit I don't even think about it when I put it on, but I sure am thinking about it every minute if I get in or on a vehicle without it. And the closest I've ever come to turning a tractor over was on a flat, level spot (I thought; until both right wheels fell in that hole that was covered level with leaves)./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif So when I get off the tractor to open a gate, I'll get back on and drive through the gate without the belt, get off to close the gate, and then get on and put the belt back on, and that's about the only time you'll see me not wearing it.

But of course, I reckon we all take some risks at times that others wouldn't, and that includes me. There has been some discussion on this board about boots and steel toed shoes, and I'm sure they're a good idea, but I like the comfort of my old sneakers with the velcro fasteners; just try to keep my toes out from under anything dangerous./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

JimBinMi, I, too, was wearing them in the car long before it became the law. And actually, I don't like that law; I don't like a law that only makes you protect yourself, I figure if you want to take a chance, that should be your business. I feel the same way about motorcycle helmet laws. The only good argument I've heard for such laws is the cost to the taxpayers supporting crippled and maimed folks who wouldn't have been if they'd used their safety equipment.

And why don't all riders have them? I don't know, so I'll speculate. You don't want a seat belt without a ROPS, and too many folks wouldn't want a ROPS because they can get under low tree limbs without it. Most of the riders are lower center of gravity; less likely to turn over. They come now with a safety switch to kill the engine if your weight comes off the seat (although a lot of us unplug it). They are not nearly as heavy as most tractors if one should roll over on you. They aren't normally capable of as great a speed as most tractors. Primary use is "mowing" so you aren't expected to get into as many dangerous, or rough, places as we do on the tractors. Just a few thoughts./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird - Add to that a stipulation that insurance companies wouldn't have to pay claims to folks who weren't wearing seatbelts when they were injured, so the rest of the folks wouldn't be subsidizing the stupidity of those who caused their premiums to go up.
