California law does not allow or prohibit motorcycles from passing other vehicles proceeding in the same direction within the same lane, a practice often called "lane splitting," "lane sharing" or "filtering."

There are two sides to the motorcycle issue.
I never realized how bad the other side of the issue was until I spent 2 years traveling to the Bay Area of Cali.....
It happens in other areas of the contry I have travelled, but nothing to the extreme I have seen on the lefty coast

I have never seen so many idiots riding between cars in traffic, even if traffic was moving 30+ miles per hour.

I am surprised more bikers are not killed making those terribly stupid moves!

To be honest, sometimes I would wonder if I was going to witness one of them get hit on a daily basis

I'm not sure how the practice of lane-splitting in CA constitutes a 'second side to the motorcycle issue'? Cycle riders have to be vigilant in their defensive driving no matter what. Does this somehow cause significant problems for car drivers?

Lane-splitting seems like a highly suspect practice to me and I'd never do it but if folks in CA can do it and not get killed I'm fine letting them. Obviously is isn't a big issue in safety of either the motorcyclist or the car drivers or it would be restricted. But, hey, I tend toward libertarian values and as long as it doesn't affect me go for it.

I visit California frequently and used to live there for several years. I will never get used to the fact that motorcyclists can 'split' the lanes. I think it should be illegal no question. From what I understand (was told) is that if you as a car driver change lanes and take out a motorcycle it is your fault. Don't know if this is true or not but for most any out of state driver, the last thing we are expecting is a motorcycle squeezing through traffic.

I'd rather have the motorcyclists use the paved shoulders on the left or right of the highway... seems way more safe than riding on the dotted line.

I totally agree. Bicyclists and motorcyclists are out of control. More the bicyclists around here, motorcyclists only on occasion.

I'd never lane split, even if it was legal. If you want to see something crazy, look at some videos for the UK where they encourage it....absolutely crazy............Mike

I was in a traffic jam going from bay area of CA to Santa Cruz years ago. There were 4 of us in the car headed to the beach for the day, traffic had been stop and go, and one of the guys had to take a whiz, next time we stopped, he popped his door open (passenger door and we were in the right hand lane) to jump out and relieve himself. The motorcycle that was tooling along about 30mph on the shoulder almost hit him and the door. No idea how they managed to miss us, but it was a good thing the guy was pissing, because he would have pissed himself otherwise..
