I have never heard it except Sierras. Grew up in CA. People do talk about the High Sierra but when referring more specifically to the mountains it is always Sierras. "we went camping in the Sierras."

Exactly. He has raised this challenge before. I think its an attempt to start an argument, not really intended to enlighten us native Californians from the distance of his very unrelated location.

Neither instance had anything to do with the thread topic.

Dictionary meanings are often different from regional usage.

Ever been there?

Most of my life. Beautiful mountains. Used to be a beautiful state. Probably the worst thing the liberals have done to it is to dumb down the educational system.

People also talk about the Santa Ana winds. That's wrong, too. Look into the history and you'll see. Look up the meaning of "Sierra Nevada" and you'll find that saying "Sierras" makes about as much sense as ATM machine or PIN Number.

Widespread ignorance is still ignorance. ATM Machine and PIN Number are wrong no matter how many people use it.

Ignorance is a choice.

Seems like saying Sierras is a pretty mild California colloquialism compared to some of the "valley girl speak" we'uns heard U'uns speaking a while back ago😜

Obviously.

The High Sierra is in eastern California, USA, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Dont people refer to the Sierra Mountains range as ‘the Sierras’ the same way they refer to the Rocky Mountains range as ‘the Rockies’?

Yeah, but that's mostly the entertainment industry exaggerating for dramatic effect, not something you hear in public. Well maybe at a mall with a bunch of silly kids trying to impress one another. Easy to tune out.

One vernacular I encountered and found interesting: We recruited the best and brightest CPA candidates. Some of the brightest men and women came from a Hispanic accounting honor society at the State University. 20 years later a lot of those kids are now mid-level managers, they were motivated then and still are. But they loved going back and forth between the well-dressed yuppie world their college had prepared them for, and the world of their elders who were likely farm workers or construction workers. The only example I can remember now was: "Hiya Sherlock" ... which superseded "Hiya Holmes", last week's and now superseded code name for 'homeboy' - in this instance an honored professional colleague from a shared background. Expressing well educated and also firmly rooted, all in in one continually-changing expression. These kids were endlessly amused at making up new slang that compared/contrasted the two worlds they moved comfortably between.

Know how you can tell a Southern Californian from a Northern Californian? US 101 runs the length of the state. Down there they always refer to a freeway as 'the 101' for example. Up here 'the' isn't used, it's just "take 101 then East on I-80", for example.

There really are different cultures in different parts of the state, after all its as large as the east coast from Boston to Atlanta.
