The mine would have already had a permit to mine coal. They were in the pit so most likely no run off. They probably didn't need the government involved at all. They just didn't want to tear up a multi million dollar machine.

The big difference between the freeway and the dragline was who owned it, freeway is the governments(assuming federal) and they are quick to suspend or change the rules for their own projects!

The dragline, a private company, not so much.
And i imagine building freeway has been done a few more times then a one off salvage.

I don't understand and have never seen the towing cable mentioned earlier that is on some John Deere and other tractors. Where is this cable and any model numbers so I can look at one and see one? It doesn't seem right that you could rip a tractor in half just by pulling with it but maybe I'm behind the times.

My nephews have it on a 9230. I have seen it on a variety of other JDs but I am not sure of the numbers.

Deere 9230 is a big tractor. I'll take a look at one the next day or so. I never knew this. Thank you.

Are the cables only on the articulated tractors? You can see one on this big boy:

Nope, this guy has one too:

In Holland where there are areas of slushy peat soil on top of beach sand, people have been hiring contractors to plough sandy subsoil through the peat. Usually two tractors towing. Especially near the headland where the tow tractors start to turn, the plough tractor was prone to snap in half right behind the bellhousing where the gearbox is narrow. They all use a tow cable attached to the 3pt mounted plough, underneath the tractor.

On clay soil too heavy to grow potatoes they do it too: then the extra power used to come from a 23 ton Cameco 805 which would spin the rims in the tires... on peat they just didnt dare using it, so several standard tractors were used to tow..
