As for the boat motor. I don't know who is more stupid. The driver, the guy who engineered the operation, the owner of that stupid truck (with the two foot box, meant for a house plant, not a motor) or the people laughing when it went (probably expensively) wrong.

The idiot driver who couldn't ease forward without mashing the accelerator gets #1 dumbass spot. Then the cackling whatever-they-weres laughing hysterically. People who find someone else's misfortune hilarious deserve a special dose of karma at some point.

I think it is OK if you first tell them, "when this all goes wrong, I am going to laugh my head off"...

I agree that's a pretty useless driver.

WRT the laughing, I think karma should apply to laughing at the misfortune of strangers and innocent parties, but family and friends get an exemption. If any of my family and friends see me do something stupid they laugh, and it goes the other way of course too. It isn't malicious, it is just the way family and friends work. You are taking it too seriously. It's not like anyone got hurt physically.

If someone just does something stupid that's fair game for laughing. But when there are injuries or something is destroyed and folks find it hilarious they are just callous. I'd much rather have my friends and family feeling sorry for a disaster that potentially just cost me hundreds of dollars than laughing and making it worse.

If your truck uses cables to hold the tailgate up rather than the steel straps of old, be advised they tend to collect water in the middle of the strap since it's one big U when the tailgate is up and they rust inside the cosmetic plastic coating. Using the tailgate as a shelf is risky since hitting bumps changes a heavy static load into a very heavy dynamic load. I've seen them break which is why I switched my truck over to the old style steel straps that are as strong today as they were when new decades ago.

Did you know there are also vehicles that have been struck by lightning?

Those kids were taking their lives in their hands by even being outside let alone compounding it by being UP in the back of a metal vehicle.

Really.... some people just don't take the hazards of life seriously.

Acquaintance of mine had 3 guys riding on his folded down tailgate going down a county road. Cable broke, guys dumped of, serious injuries, lost work ,medical bills, lawsuits. Bad deal turning friendships sour.

Sure it was a poor idea but many have done it. I sure never have since.

My kids were taught it is not polite to laugh at people, but it is ok to laugh with them. Our girls were 2/4/6 and playing outside when the 4 year old crashed the wagon riding down a hill. The 6yo said to her, "Laugh, so we can laugh with you"

You raised them well.

My daughter's close friend had overprotective parents. When 4 years the kid was running around and crashed her head into the corner of the table next to me. Before she could figure out if that hurt or not, I immediately said "Don't run your head into the table, that will make your head hurt!". Just as her parents leaped to their feet wailing with anguish and sure to get her wailing along with them. Kid turned to me and told me solemnly it wasn't serious. Her parents stopped cold, momma asked me 'how did you do that? She's very sensitive, normally we would have to comfort her a few minutes until she stops crying.' I thought to myself she cries because you are upset!

Much later I gave my daughter a tiny Swiss Army Knife among her birthday presents, then a little later we gave one to that little friend on her birthday. Her parents were shocked, 'but she'll cut herself!'. I replied Oh she'll be a little bloody for a couple of days then she'll figure it out. Momma scowled but recognized my humor, she wanted her kid to have more of the common sense that our kids possess so she dropped the issue. Even later, tree climbing. I didn't restrict the two girls climbing, that tree had branches so dense only a little kid could zig-zag among the limbs. Momma saw them 10 ft up and panicked, I finally persuaded her climbing trees is a normal part of a kid's childhood. That momma must have had a very protected childhood.

True! Stupid is Funny unless someone gets hurt. Stupid is also Funny when they damage their own stuff because they should learn that their brain is there for deductive reasoning, not to hold their hat up.
