Driving home last night and passed a vehicle going the other way that was a truck pulling a trailer with pallets on it. I think there were three stacks of pallets about 6' high and I didn't see any straps. Friction! It's all good until physics comes a callin'...

Rob

Passed a guy headed home from work last night with three round bales on a small trailer. 2 side by side with one in the middle on top. Not one strap on it.

Headed back to town an hour later with my wife and he was on the side of the road about 3 miles from where I passed him earlier. Two round bales were off the trailer. One in the ditch, one in the middle of the lane, and a cop writing a ticket :D Every once in a while they get caught :D

Our flat bed towing guys do the same thing using the winch to secure the vehicle.

Isn't anything straightforward anymore? Saw one of those guys yesterday. On the door? "Roadside Solutions" . Will this stupidity ever end?

Most flat deck tow trucks just use the winch to hold the front of their load in place. Don't know if it is electric or hydraulic, or if that would make a difference, but they usual just haul it up, level the deck, put chains on the back, then draw it tight with the front winch, then take off. Basically the same thing this guys seems to have done, although he is using only one chain doubled back for the rear of the trailer and certainly lower gauge cable and equipment.
I see that too, but yes they are hydraulic. I have to "assume" they are made for that with some sort of mechanical braking in them that is slightly better than what you find on a standard recovery winch that most people put on trailers. To be perfectly honest, the guy I posted probably was fine and not nearly as bad as some of the posts on here, though I wouldn't trust it and I can pretty much guarantee the manufacturer doesn't intend the winches to be used that way.

I like redundancy when securing a load but that probably marks me as a rookie. EXPERTS don't think that redundancy is necessary from my observations.

Probably true. I'm no expert and I don't do as well as I should in securing my loads I will admit. This thread is helping though!

Redundancy is good. Because loads shift, straps break, sharp edges cut straps, straps loosen up, etc.

You see dozers and excavators chained down without redundancy all the time. It seems to satisfy inspectors. With my luck, I would have six levels of redundancy and get fined for having one slightly frayed strap or a torn off rating label.

Saw one tonight, couldn't get a pic. Guy in beatup pickup, pulling beat up trailer, right hand lane of interstate doing about 40 mph. Had 6x6x16 posts on trailer at a funny angle, back of posts about dragging on ground, fronts didn't look secure. One strap dragging on road 10 ft behind.

Traffic in left lane was coming to about a complete stop from cars cutting over to pass.

No pics for this. But, I saw a van towing a flat bed trailer with an old pickup truck on it without any tie downs. A few miles down the road I caught up with him at the stop light. He's going to be there a while. He stopped the van, the trailer stopped, but the pickup didn't. It had rolled forward and crashed thru the back of the van.

It's been on the side of the road a few days, but somebody else was driving so I finally got a pic. I presume there is a trailer under there. But as the front isnt any higher off the ground I have my doubts on an axle and/or wheels being under there as anymore. There was a tongue up front, so somewhat sure it is/was a trailer. No sign of them or dragging behind it though. 20180615_123741.jpeg
