If we only concerned ourselves with our own matters, this site for one would not exist.

And when I do see those unused montrosities (RV Trailers) cluttering up neighborhoods and properties, or get behind one, I am affected to some extent.

I do feel sorry for all the lemming like people that get fooled into such things. People that never experienced passions, hobbies or interests of their own making.

Wow... some lemmings like diesel and electric toys...and some like RV's
To each their own, as long as they are happy!

I saw this guy today. If it wasn’t bad enough already notice the tow truck boom in the bed. IMG_4322.JPG

Funny how this thread has turned so righteous. Photos now come with a disclaimer.

It's been on the side of the road a few days, but somebody else was driving so I finally got a pic. I presume there is a trailer under there. But as the front isnt any higher off the ground I have my doubts on an axle and/or wheels being under there as anymore. There was a tongue up front, so somewhat sure it is/was a trailer. No sign of them or dragging behind it though. View attachment 558648

Ya, that use to have 8" wheels at one time. Probably torsion suspension. I knew a guy just like that.. He did the same thing one time too by overloading (severely) and lost wheel and wheel hubs :)

Re post7935, that is how the local towies secure cars. Provided the wire rope rating is greater than the weight of the vehicle, and the chain is rated at twice the weight(stopping forward movement) of the car it is legal.

So an electric winch is an adequate tie down??View attachment 558583
No, in my area (and all the ather ones i know of) the winch is not considered an acceptable means of securing a load. A seperate tie down was required, even a lose safety chain was acceptable.

Depending on what I was hauling and how far I would either just throw on a chain on the front or use wheel straps since a lot of the cars I transported required soft tie downs anyways.

I never saw it enforced much but I was supposed to go through the scales and preferred not to get pulled in. Plus dot enforcement was starting to target the auto auctions where I went, man if I was on this thread back then! You all would have a regular flow of pics lol

I use my hydraulic winch for tie down. Although it’s more secure than an electric winch. I also use my wheel lift to tighten the rear chains. I used to just pull the vehicle forward to tighten the rear chains but I decided it’s pulling too hard and tightening the rear chains is better.

In AZ, flat bed tow operators were required to have one front safety chain on the car, in addition to the 2 rear chains. Our company was pretty religious about it, as in if you were "caught" not using one, you were written up, even if no damage etc. 3 of those write ups (with no damages), and you were gone.

I very rarely ever saw other tow companies using the front safety chain, and I very rarely ever saw anyone get cited for it. It was checked during the annual state inspection that you had one, but that was usually it.

I would load the car, just pull the hyd winch down enough to get the car to squat on the suspension a little bit, and then hook the front safety chain, then if the front cable/winch came loose, by the time the car came up on it's full height again, the front chain would be tight then, keeping the car on. I never once lost a winch or winch cable, but we inspected our equipment all the time, replacing cable anytime we got frays or flat spots.
