I was going to the parking lot across the road. And I didn’t see him until I was already stopped at the red light. There aren’t a lot of good options in that short length of time.

re lane splitting I see it all the time and its incredibly dangerous. Rigid saddlebags less than an inch from contact, dodging to get the mirror clear of a semi's body, usually too fast to evade if someone changes lanes unexpectedly in moderate speed dense traffic. Always so much faster than traffic that motorists don't realize there's a bike there. I saw a CHP officer turn his handlebars making the front wheel hop sideways at 70mph dodging a van that never saw him, then a week later read of an officer crash with major injuries at the same site. Likely the guy I saw, inexperienced and way over his head.

I used to ride, including a couple of years when it was my only transportation. I've always had in the back of my mind a neighbor when I was a kid, who died in his first season of semi-pro racing. That made me cautious. Luckily I never dropped a bike.

I lived in California in the 80's. One time my buddy and I were riding back from Santa Cruz on Hwy 17 and we came around a curve and traffic was backed up as far as you could see. I told him it was legal to ride between the cars, so we did.
I looked at my odometer when we started. A few people blocked us so we went on the right side to get around them. When we got to the end of the traffic jam, traffic opened up, it was an accident.
My odometer showed that we had driven between cars for 8 1/2 miles.

I see these kids toys and think of my wagon (that I still have) that was made of wood and steel! I don't think there is a dimes worth of plastic on the thing, come to think of it. Now it's 100%

The ones that get me are the full size pickups pulling out of the lumber yard towing one of these little trailers with just a small quantity of lumber or something else in it, that would have easily fit in the bed of the truck. I just don't get that at all. Full size truck, full size truck bed, towing a little dinky trailer behind it with a handful of small items in it.

Trailer isn't as dinky as above, it is a BigTex 35SA 6.5x10; but I do that often. My truck is used as a rolling toolbox and won't fit anything of much size. Trailers are how I move nearly everything...
