When hauling long boards or pipe, I try to strap everything down with one or more straps and at least one strap wrapped around the objects. By "choking" the boards, there is less likely of any one board sliding out.

When hauling long boards I like to lay a tie down strap first, stack the lumber on it, then wrap the straps completely around and cinch it down.
Then put another strap on for insurance.

FWIW...Where there is a tide you generally cross the stern lines on small craft when backed into a slip...the longer lines give the vessel more room to move up and down with the tide...

Crossed lines keep the stern better centered in its position so it doesn't bump something beside it.

If parallel lines or crossed lines each keep the boat no more than 4 feet (for example) from the dock, I think response to tides would be identical.

Not a boat person, but it looks like that stern line give a nice spring forward. At least that's what i've noted when working unloading.

This is why I stack my board in a semi-pyramid shape - it gives your strap some "purchase" on all columns of boards.

Here is my 1 minute sketch from paint.

Would wrapping the strap all the way around the pile be better?

I do both! Bind the pile together with one strap, and then clamp it down to bed anchors with another.
