This may be a little off-topic for a tractor site, but I'd like to pick your brains if I might.

My son picked up a 2004 SUV for me in Vancouver (no winter driving) and he'll drive it there until they move back to Ottawa at the end of July. Then he'll ship it to me in Portland, ON. I've started looking at auto shippers who use trucks or railway cars. All make claims of integrity and run down their competitors. It looks like a cut-throat business.

Has anybody had any experiences, good or bad, shipping trucks or tractors along this route? (The normal run is between CN depots in Delta BC to Vaughan, ON.)

The truck is a 4950 pound Porsche Cayenne S, a terrific tow vehicle.

I have not shipped a car in canada.

I have shipped one from California to Tennessee.

I booked with 1 company that guaranteed a date, broke it and refunded my money. 2nd company did the same. 3rd company broke the guaranteed date but kept money, then came through 2 weeks late.

All those big shipping companies are just brokers. You will come out ahead on time, money and frustration if you deal directly with the owner/operator/driver.

An update five years later: CN shipping worked just fine. It cost $1500. and took three weeks. At the Montreal end they shipped the car to a depot just outside Ottawa, where I picked it up, all clean and shiny.

The Cayenne ran us four years and 50,000 km before I grew tired of it and bought a Lexus hybrid. Anybody want a Cayenne? Excellent body but wicked fuel cost with high test.
