Spare tire carrier

I'm finally getting around to mounting my spare tire carrier on my flat bed trailer and I'm open for suggestions/ideas where to mount it:

1) up front between the frame? right side front or right side rear and
2) bolt it on or weld...

With the load bar brackets on the frame, I can't find a box for up front so that's where I'm thinking to place it but I've been know to do something and then regret it, just ask the wife...

Just my opinion, but i truly believe that no matter where you mount a spare on a trailer, it gets in the way sooner or later. Plus when you store your trailer outdoors, its just one more tire to get weather worn.

I always try to just keep the spare in the shop, where it doesn't get sun cracked, i can check the air pressure on it, drop in the bed of the truck and have it along while i tow. Not in the way, not easily stolen, not weather checked... just my thoughts on the matter.

Not have the spare mounted is just not practical.:confused2: I tow a trailer 2-3 times a week and maybe 250 miles or so. I could not imagine having to load it up in the truck each time. By the way, my 3 trailers have 3 different wheels so having 1 spare would not work. One is 15" 5 lug, the other is 15" 6 lug, and the other is 16" 6 lug.

I have been dealing with trailers for 25 years and this has to be the worst advise I have heard. Thats like saying leave your spare for your car at hone and only put it in the trunk when you are ready to drive. Just does not makes sense to me.

As for where to mount it I like the right side just in-front of the fender. One of my boat trailers has it mounted flat on the tongue . I would not want this on car hauler because of future winch mounts, tool boxes, ect.

Well gee whiz ya don't have to blast a guy just because his usage is different than yours. In the spring I use mine 2 or more times every week but the rest of the year, not so much, if at all. But the point is, no mater how much use the trailer gets, sooner or later the mounted tire is going to have to be worked around because it is in the way unless the same size load is hauled most of the time. And unless it is parked inside the sun will do damage to the mounted tire. If I was making several trips a week most of the year then I would consider mounting the tire to the trailer but not a lot of us do that much trailering.

I'm debating the same issue. Don't want to mount the spare in front of the fender because then I lose the ability to side load with a forklift in that spot. Don't want to put it on the tongue because it would interfere with a winch mount.

I'm thinking I may try to find a way to put it underneath the trailer, maybe below the tongue. Not sure yet.

I mounted mine on a bracket i welded to the side rail of my trailer. hasnt goten in the way of anything (yet).

That is where mine is on my trailer also. It has only gotten in the way once in 8 years when I was hauling a 10x10 Hot Tub. We simply took it off that time and put it on the bed with a ratchet strap. To haul the Hot Tub we layed old carpet on the rails then put 4-5 pieces of pipe down then the Hot Tub was loaded. When we got it home we backed up the trailer to the deck and jacked the trailer up to the level of the deck and rolled it off and in place by leap frogging the pipe. Worked great.

This was all before we put the rail on the deck.

I too keep spares in the garage and the truck bed.

Mine sets on the right front on my 16', on an upright on the tongue on the 10'. ~~ grnspot
