Speaking Of Using Brakes For Turning...

I read with interest the discussion of turning with individual brakes, hoping someone might address the question I have. I often use one brake to help make sharp turns with our old gear tractor, but our new one has hydro trans, and the hydro pedal is right next to the brake pedals, requiring some uncomfortable gymnastics from the seat. Am I missing something here? Does anyone have a good trick for accomplishing this task?

Some brands and models have them on the same side as the hydro pedals. I was told they can mostly be used when the cruise control is utilized.

The tractor is a Kubota L3830HST. The hydro pedal is a crescent shaped affair with a pedal on each end, the forward pedal being just under the brake pedals. Hitting the brakes when they are hooked together disengages the cruise control. I'm not sure if hitting just one brake pedal will knock off the cruise control, but when using the single brake for turning you're often in a situation where you don't want to be using cruise control, so you have to be stepping on the go pedal at the same time you're stepping on the stop pedal.

Don't get much wear and tear on those brakes, nor much use of them either. I'd be lost without left and right turning brakes. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I agree, it's a odd design. I was a real new-b when I was shopping for a tractor, but it was one of the things I noticed on some. I do use mine on occasion when clearing a light snow with the FEL and once in awhile out in the field.

Me too. It's such a big deal for me that I will not buy a tractor unless it has turning brakes I can actually use. Many times using my loader I have the front wheels off the ground or with not much weight, and using differential brakes for steering is second nature in those instances. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This is one of a few things that swung me to buy a JD and the one I did. The 4010 has turning brakes. A 2210 didn't. BX models didn't have. B models had them behind the hydro pedal, and cruise was disengaged if you hit a turning brake. Don't have 2 right feet to hold hydro and hit a turning brake.

Noted that NH and other makes were set up like the Kubotas. Didn't even look at them.

Ralph, that's true of most NH CUTs, but not the TC35/40/45 DA models. On the hydro models, the brakes are on the left and hydro pedals on the right. The same is true for the Case/Farmall compacts, models DX35/40/45. I'm only referring to the hydro models, because that's where the problem arises. I believe there are no issues on gear drive models unless some have a less than desireable placement of the foot throttle.
