So last year I bought a used Puma 720 made by Pronovost that operates at 540 rpm like all the rest. It blows the snow OK but I have to have my rpm's full throttle. I went to the Pronovost site and see they sell an excelerator kit that would increase the blower to 740 rpm's. This would allow me to blow it further at the same speed or reduce my throttle. They want $1000 for this. Although I think it would improve performance I can't see spending that kind of money . Are there sites out there that could rework my existing gearbox to speed it up rather then spending $1000. Love to hear your opinion.

maybe you can get a look at the parts breakdown and see just what they are selling.. is it a different
gearbox? are there sprockets/chains in the drive?
i don't know of any kits myself, but somebody may chime in...

The accelerator is a gear box that you add to your blower. It fits onto the shaft of the original gear box. It will spin 40% faster, making the blower much more efficient in light blowing conditions. In heavy conditions you would have to slow your traveling speed and keep high engine revs, by using your lowest gear. The PTO shaft will need to be cut to accomodate the extra box and mounting hardware.

I don't know what your tractor is, but if you have more than the standard 540 PTO, use the next range as I do, however my Mirsubishi has 3 PTO speeds. 540, 710, 1000.
I have used the 710 for the last 5 years or so and the 540 in dense heavy compacted snows.

Their box would have to contain 2 sprockets, chain and a tension device, or 3 gears.
Problem would be costs of building a one of, male and female shafts, bearings, etc etc.

What is the clearance like between your impeller and the 'drum'? if the gap is excessive you might be loosing velocity there. If that is the case add 'scrapers' (my term) to fill the gap. Bolted 1/4 plastic strips could solve the gap problem. Kits are sold like this for smaller walk behind blowers and the claims are impressive.

If you invest in speed increaser it means SPEED INCREASER and this business of reducing your throttle is a no no.

You should invest in one of Clarences Impeller Kits for large snow blowers AND purchase some slick sheet material from Horn Plastics and line the impeller drum and the cross auger housing to make the snow flow faster at lower ground speeds as the snow does not enter the imepller at the same rate all the time.

No sense in shooting yourself in the foot when the repair at most might be $200.00 with the flat head bolts from FARM TEK to anchor the sheet pieces-remember that you should cut the sheet in half to cut the half moon opening for the impeller drum.

Not practical or worthwhile. How do you plan on saving $500 worth of fuel a year when your current fuel budget is $250 ?

Bon Jour and good morning Piloon,

Hope all is well In Quebec, the weather is great in New York without
the rain for sure.

I believe these speed increasers are the same ones they use for the larger
snow clearers as they can be installed for the 1000 R.P.M. power take off systems.

As buickanddeere has mentioned it is not practical or worthwhile
simply becuase you need torque to create the rotary energy to do
this as well and you do not have the continuous torque available.

What am I missing here, nowhere is it mentioned a fuel budget and no where is the tractor size mentioned so how can you know he doesnt have continuous torque available. Just a question as I see a couple of edits but nowhere is the tractor mentioned or the fuel cost.
I am not into snow blowers but $1000 seems like a lot to upgrade one. Before spending that kind of money I think I would try to sell the one I have and buy a new more powerful one if needed.

Shall we have a group lament of the disappearance of the common 540/1000 pto on tractors?
