I bought a used B7300 and the previous owner threw in a little used Bush Hog SQ480. While mowing some unfamiliar ground a couple of days ago, I "accidental found" a couple of tree stumps the power company left behind while clearing the right of way. I was mowing grass about 2 feet high, going slow but unfortunately both times my tractor wheels straddled the 14 inch diameter stump perfectly so I didn't know it was there till the terrible racket issued from the shredder followed quickly by the tractor stalling. "Oh great, what did I break the first time I'm mowing." The stumps were cut off short enough that they went right under the shredder frame without touching but then the blades caught them. There was dirt piled up around the stump, the way a tree pushes aside dirt as it grows; so it wasn't a really terrible first impact type of hit but like I said, it stalled the tractor.

My first surprise came when I backed off the stump then engaged the shredder again; it didn't shear the pin. That's the first thing I'm going to change; a softer shear pin. Next, I'm going mark the stumps till I can remove them so I don't encounter them again.

I continued mowing even after the second hit and there was no abnormal vibrations or noises so I think everything is OK. Is there anything I need to check to avoid something breaking in the future (besides softer shear pins)? I know it's not a great thing to have happen but is there a possibility I damaged anything in the tractor since it hit hard enough to stall?

You might consider buying a PTO driveshaft clutch. You can adjust the amount of friction and no more having to replace shear pins and finding out you have no more.

It might already HAVE a clutch on it. My 72" Bush Hog came with one. Biker, are you sure it doesn't have a clutch right at the gearbox?

I guess there is always the possibilty. Watch and listen to how it runs and inspect for leaks. Unless you see or hear evidence of a problem I would tend to feel you got lucky. :drink:

That is something I fear about buying used equipment like that. You never know when the prior owner got tired of replacing shear pins and stuck a grade 5 bolt in place of the grade 2. :( Perhaps it is due to my lack of experience with them, or perhaps just my paranoia.....but I would feel equal suspicion with a slip clutch even if it was new. I mean, how do you really test them to know if they are set properly? A shear pin is mass manufactured in batches out of the same metal to the same specs. Physics give little leeway in how they will react under a given stress. Slip clutches are all individually set and adjusted, and even if done by the same hand are prone to variance. I will grant they are good at what they do, but how do you know yours is adjusted correctly?

All the shredders I've used had shear pins, never had one with a clutch. I assume that a clutch would be obvious? All I see is a bolt (didn't check the head to see what grade but I know I'm getting some grade 2) at the front of the gearbox.

In fact, I read somewhere that a clutch is not available for the SQ480.

Usually it's a big round thing about 8-10" in dia. with plates, bolts and springs or spring washers.

Well, I finally pulled the shear (I have to laugh at that) bolt. It was a metric 8.8 which is comparable to a grade 5. I have to find a grade 2 bolt that will fit the hole, a half inch is too big; maybe a 7/16. I also found that the e-clip is missing so if I had sheared the bolt, the drive shaft might have done the floppy, floppy. I usually try to check things out when I buy used but you can't remember everything. I also found the gear oil milky so I'm going to change that. Anyone with a squealer that can tell me what grade gear oil the book calls for? The shop sells a universal clutch that they said should fit the SQ480, I just don't know if I want to invest another $100+ right now. Shear pins have always worked for me in the past. I don't do a lot of mowing in unknown territory; this was the first time mowing the area I did and now I know about the stumps.

You may find that a grade 2 bolt will shear to easy I would stick with the 5 you will be fine

A grade 2 is the most common used for shear bolts. The idea is to shear the bolt and do less damage to the equipment; both tractor & shredder. I would rather stop and replace a shear bolt than do more damage and spend more down time and money repairing major damage.
