Steel loop/hoop for a tow chain; where can I get one?

At the risk of repeating myself: Is there something wrong with just taking it around a trailer ball and hooking back to the chain with the grab hook?

I was told not to because the ball can shear off and become a projectile.

How about cutting a circle and a slot on a 3/8'' plate. Drop the chain thru the circle and slide the chain into the slot. The circle then is placed over the ball. A small "V" could be added to the circle to slide up against the shank when pull was applied on chain.

I measured the I.D. of the Bailey's grab loop (see post #3). It's 2.5". What I like is that you can slip a chain through the loop and grab it anywhere on the length of the chain. It gives me more flexibility than having the loop on one end only.
