I use a 580 case backhoe,--OR MOOSE!---BUT the most practical way and cheapest is to get old tank about 3 feet dia and cut one end out,-- cut hole in the other end for chimney and block the tank up over stump so air can enter the bottom and out the top THEN go for the fire inside!---toss in everything that will burn until ya got a rip roaring fire inside and go get the hotdogs and enjoy!---Stump will even burn deep into the ground if you have a lot of the dirt removed from the roots! thanks; sonny580

Took out an oak stump here a couple of mounts ago. Dug down around it by hand and cut it off 6 or 8 in under ground with my chain saw with an old chain on it. Worked like a charm and even if I had hit a rock it was an old chain. Now we just cut the grass over it and smile.

The Oaks on our place have shallow roots maybe 24 inches deep. Pines and other hardwoods have roots that go straight down to China. I have dug holes with my backhoe over six feet deep to dig out a stump 24-30" across. Even then it was hard to get out of the ground.
If you don't have a back hoe, excavator or dynamite and the tree has a deep tap root, I think the only choice you have to remove the stump is fire and rot. My wifey's grandfather farmed a very large farm. I noticed he always burned out the stumps.
