TC40D starter solenoid (2004)

My tractor has become increasingly more difficult to start. When I turn the key I get a solid click from the solenoid but it does not engage the starter motor. I took the starter off of the tractor and opened up the solenoid. I found the large copper contacts to be worn and badly pitted. Unfortunately, the solenoid doesn't come off of the starter like I'm used to seeing on a small block Chevy. Is there a way to renew or replace the copper contacts? I have done a little research and all that I see available is complete starters. P.S. What other tractors use this starter?

You can try cleaning and polishing the contact surfaces a bit. I had some success with an automobile window relay years ago by simply flipping the contacts over. You may check with a motor repair shop and see if you can find anything close.

I did polish on them a bit, by hand, but I can't get to aggressive or the surfaces will not be flat anymore and then will not make good electrical contact which puts me back in the same spot I'm in now.

Sometimes, gently tapping on the starter in multiple spots with a hammer (or such) can loosen dirt or carbon dust build up and allow the starter to work again. It's a short term solution, if it works, so you might want to be on the lookout for a replacement. Another place to check is the relays in the starter circuit. Their contacts may be worn but will pass minimal current to engage the solenoid.
