Veterans Day is tomorrow and I hope everyone takes a quick minute to think about what sacfrices veterans have made for our freedom and give one a quick "Thank You". Especially our WW II veterans in particular. We are losing these great men now at a tremendous rate.

As a Desert Storm veteran, I just do not put myself in the same category with these WW II heros. These guys had balls that clanked and they just don't make men like them anymore.. They truly were our greatest generation.

To my fellow Marines, happy birthday!

To my fellow vets, thanks for the example you set for those that came after you.

As a brief memory to share..
Last friday I had the great privilege to have dinner with nearly 40 fellow Marines in celebration of the Marine Corps birthday. Represented there were veterans ranging from a 90 year old Marine veteran who served on Pelieu and many other battles in the south pacific to myself (desert storm).

After dinner a number shared stories from their service. Boot camp to that grumpy ole Master gunny..

The traditions, the fellowship and memories make for a reflection and an awe that few can understand that have not served.

After dinner several of our party, in full dress blue uniform, were thanked for their service by those outside the private meeting / banquet room.

I think the most touching was a young teenager that went up to the SgtMaj. Saluted and said thank you for protecting my mom and me.

With that said, if you see a veteran say thanks... It really does mean alot..

scesnick - This is my first year on the "other side" of the fence as a veteran since 1971 and from my personal experience, each era of wearing the uniform has produced heros. In most cases, they may not have done what the outside would consider an heroic act, but put one foot in front of the other to do their duty and support there fellow "G.I."

IMHO a hero is all of the folks who put their lives, families, and self-interests aside to serve our Nation. I think we need to not only thank the Veteran, but the families left behind - some forever.

While this is the first year I'm not part of a "formal" veterans day activity, I will be visiting a vets home to take some books and just say hello. It is something my wife and I have done a few times a year. I think we sometimes forget our veterans on days other than Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and July 4th. So, if nothing else, I hope everybody reachs out to a vet you know and just say thanks....
