The pencil I just used to mark the board I just cut was under the remaining piece of that board when I went to grab it to mark the next cut.

When doing a task that involves hardware (screws, nuts, nails, etc.) or connectors (wire nuts, crimp splices, etc.) always have more on hand than you expect to need. You will invariably drop/lose or damage at least one.
