Then I drilled 1" holes on top of the bottom rail, cut tenons in the baulusters(cedar branches) with a 9" disc sander:

I'll post some pic's of the whole railing later. Boy did I make a mess...chainsawing & disc sanding inside the house

Then I worked on the temporary cedar ladder that will be in place until we can afford the $2500 iron spiral staircase:
