I just got a notice from the company I get propane from that I can lock in the new price for this coming year at only $2.70 per gal. Thats up 72 cents from last year or about 35% more.
For the last few years I've set the heat at the farm at 50 when I'm not there to keep the pipes from freezing, and it has still cost me over $1200 to heat the place over the winter. It looks like this winter I may not heat it at all, just drain the pipes, put RV antifreeze in the drains and toilets and not go out there again until spring.

I haven't called suburban propane yet but it looks like I'm in for it when I do. I might have to kick the pellet stove up higher instead.

do you have any windows facing south?

SOLAR HEATER

there are plenty of options that you can build using basically junk parts, just google on solar window heater and there are several modifications of the one built in the above link

hope this helps

Home heating kerosene is up by about 40% over here. If things dont change soon, old folks are going to be exposed to a very bleak, cold and potentially deadly winter. I heard on the radio this morning that they are expecting an increase in elderly deaths as a result of the increased cost of home heating.... That makes me sick. I dont want this to turn into another "price of oil rant" but.... the suits in wall street and in London are making billions in profits with their money games, and as a consequence, many vulnerable people will inevitably suffer as a result of these speculation wars....

If you have an elderly neighbour, keep them in mind this coming winter.

My recent price enquiry with my usual kerosene supplier, for 1000 litres of home heating kerosene.... @ €1.04 a litre = €1040 (or $1604usd)   how in the **** is an old person with limited means supposed to cover that (even with state assistance)??

There is a lot of info online about making solar air/water heaters. This is my favorite using aluminum pop cans for the collector. I have been collecting cans for a year now and hope to build something soon.

Boo. Electric is not the most expensive to heat with everywhere. Especially if you step into modern times and use electric to run a heat pump and extract energy from the air or ground for your heat.

Or better yet, get your axe. My heat is earned....

Nice looking wood pile!

So far I'm glad that I put in a pellet stove to get away from propane. With the price of fuel I am not looking forward to what the pellet prices are going to be this year.

nice looking wood pile.....

now, what would be the irony in using one of those old billboard tarps to cover it all.........the one i received the other day was an exxon mobile ad:D

i wish i could find something that "fit" me and i could beat the pants off of the system......

Well the propane dealer hit me hard. $3.17 a gallon this coming year. Looking for wood pellets tomorrow.
