Over the weekend I removed my tractor and attachments to a safe area 35 miles away since we have the Ridge fire looming 4 miles from my house since last weekend. They mostly let it burn it appears until it got to a few hundred acres???? Seems to be the norm these days? We've had six weeks with 80F + weather and no rain worth mentioning.

I figured why wait for chaos? Some people aren't simply smart enough to think ahead of their own nose sometimes.

Stay safe, and good luck!

After seeing a couple of fires close up, and in particular how fast wind driven fires move, we try to be ready for fire at all times. Go bags are packed, critical documents are a grab and go package, and we have a large fire perimeter set up. Nothing is going to be one hundred percent, but we have tried to harden up the house and out buildings, putting fine screens over any openings and sprinklers setup to water the perimeter to hopefully slow the fire.

It is just "normal" for wild land living for us.

Here are a couple of links that I have found useful;

(Here is the NASA link for your area; NASA-FIRMS you can change the time window to better see how the fire is progressing. )

I also look at Windy.com for prevailing winds and they recycle some of the above information with different overlays.

Fingers crossed.

All the best,

Peter

You can't be too safe. Years ago we had a controlled burn get away from the firefighters. It got pretty large before they knocked it down.
Lots of fires all around us... they are letting nothing burn. They are throwing everything at every incident. (y)

Good luck to you.

When I hear the numbers on the square miles burned in these large fires, I try and equate it to distances I know from local landmarks. I tell my wife and kids that XXX fire would be from here down to such and such town, and over to that other town over there, and everything in between. Then it starts to strike you as to the scale of these things.

The CA York fire burn 100k acres. To put that in perspective... the fire was larger than the state of Rhode Island

Well, kinda, as the York fire isn't yet contained, but Rhode Island is 1,544sq.mi., or 994,000 acres. So not quite to Rhode Island size, yet.

We had a 400,000 acre fire come within a mile of us. Scary, but so were the wind driven 10-20 acre fires that got to the property line. Scary can be quite local...

All the best,

Peter

A few years ago we had a fire going in September. Well it gets windy here in the fall and we had 80 mph winds come in.

It consumed close to 100k acres in a period of 24 hours. It was all the FS could do just to get out from in front of it.

It was a dark orange at noon, all the street lights were on. It was eerie.

Rhode Island is almost 777k acres.

There are at least 20 ranches in Texas that are well over 100k acres.
My Bad. Thank you for fact checking. Big fire anyway
