Here are a couple of pix from my continuing effort to clean up about 20 acres around my barn and building site. They show one way to down a dead tree...maybe not the safest way...but successful none-the-less.

When I started looking for a compact tractor I stumbled upon a link on the information super highway that lead me to TractorByNet. What a great trip that's been the past 5-6 years!

I learned about pricing. I learned about what tractors can and can't do and what I need for my home. Armed with this i shopped around and came home with a B7500 HST and some toys!

When it came to get a tiller I contacted thru a meeting on TractorByNet Sweet Tractor Sales and I got myself a tiller.

When I got a carryall, TractorByNet was there on how to deck it. Then it came to telescoping links, repairing a hydro pedal, and doing landscaping, TractorByNet was by my side.

I also found a killer deal on a used tractor on Ebay and by golly TractorByNet was there to inform me to investigate the matter. Thanks to TractorByNet from keeping me a few thousand dollars richer by finding out I was nearly scammed on Ebay.

Recently while working at a concert a fellow came out of the crowd to say he reads my posts on TractorByNet!!

Thanks TractorByNet for the knowledge and all my new freinds around the world!

Hi tracecom,
You have some great looking property there. Looks like clearing is going to keep you busy for a while. I'm glad you recognized that is not the safest way to do it. I don't want to put a damper on your thread or discourage you, but your are right. That is very dangerous. Just as a word of precaution, I've seen where if that tree did not break cleanly on the back side, and it was hanging on, it could come and kick back right to you, possibly impaling the tractor and operator. That is a huge tree!
It is always interesting to see what others do. I find myself doing similar non-safe operations, but as I get older, I tend to recognize them more. I know a guy's got to do what he's got to do. Good luck and be careful.

evergreens = tap root = not going to push them over.

perhaps a chainsaw next time for a little help ;)

3RRL,

You are correct; it was risky.

schmism,

The tree was actually a long dead ash. It was there long before the loblolly pines that surrounded it were planted, and the oldest of those is about 50 years old.

A chainsaw would have certainly taken the dead tree down, but there were a couple of "widow makers" hanging from it, and I didn't want to take that chance. As it turns out the tree was very punky starting about 12 feet off the ground, but the lower twelve feet and the roots were amazingly sound. It took over an hour for the back hoe to dig out the stump and the hole was over 10 feet deep. The photo below only shows the beginning of the excavation; by the time we finished it was almost dark. There were three separate sets of large roots radiating from the base; the first set visible in the photo and two other sets deeper in the ground.

That was some high risk behavior. I know trees and I know you can never predict what a dead one will do. Glad it did what you wanted it to do

Clearing is one of the hardest tasks on machinery. Tractors aren't bull dozers. Other than that.. most small tractors can do the same jobs as larger tractors.. but take more time. There are limits to the size and weight of material handling though.. I.E. 20hp tractors and large round hay bales don't mix.. etc.

Morning tracecom.
Years back on TBN gentlman posted some like you did but w/JCB backhoe but he got the heck scared out of him,for the main root system was under rear end of the bachhoe...wish I could find the old post photo of JCB rear tire etc.. setting on top of the roots...yikes.

Glad you came out on the winning end.

I wish my neighbor down the road would realize that.

People that use CUT's like bulldozers eventually find out that they aren't.
