At about 5 pm our county was placed under a tornado warning. An explosive line of storms came storming through. I was headed towards the basement when I heard on the scanner that a tornado was spotted 8 miles southwest of our town's closest northern neighboring town. That would put the twister very close. Probably about a mile or less. I was in the basement and didn't see anything. I wasn't coming up for anything! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Also, there was rotation about 4 or so miles west of us and moving east. I hate this time of year. May seems to always be the time of the year that we get the worst weather. Today was no exception. There are wires down all over the place, but the power here is still on, thanfully. As I looked around, I didn't see any damage. There is LOTS of standing water all over the place. The rain was coming down in torrents. Very, very heavy. I am very thankful that all we have is some standing water.

Well we didn't have anything quite as exciting as you but we have a serious thunderstorm hit us that lasted about 90 minutes. All the lawn furniture is blown around, the cover was blown off the hot tub, and the 2 concrete blocks that hold the cover down were each tossed. One only went about 4' the other was twice that distance from the hot tub.

Storms are an amazing thing. Often frightening, but always fascinating.

Most definately! I agree. I love watching thunderstorms. Lightning at night is absolutely beautiful. It always amazes me. Tornadoes on the other hand, I'll just watch them on TV. I prefer to not see them in person. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The storms that pushed through, surprisingly enough, their winds were errily still. Even though the rain was coming down in torrents, the winds were still. Very eery...

The big kicker is, is the weatherman is calling for a repeat of the weather we had today for tomorrow! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Also, there were numerous waterspouts spotted right off the coast. I'd sure would've hated to be out on the Lake, today!

We had a heck of a storm yesterday. Had my 50 foot Pines bending WAY over! It came in so fast and so ferocious that I thought we might get another twister. I heard a terrible electric noise and the power went out to our township for 4 1/2 hours. We have a substation nearby that went.

We ate by candlelight! It was neat, but I'd rather have the juice on, cause it was kinda hot, and hard to entertain a toddler in the dark.

We had some tornados from that same system in our area. Trees down all over the place. Hoping it dries out enough today to get some outside work done /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We were heading out to dinner; I decided to check the weather service webpage just before we left, and was surprised to see a tornado watch in effect for all of western NY! Having spent the last 20 years in the western US, I haven't had any experience with tornados. My girlfriend, however, grew up in Alabama where they were more common, so we prepared emergency shelter in the basement, just in case. The watch was in effect 'til 2300; turned out to be some of the calmest weather we've had in weeks here. About midnight, the thunderstorms started up and got going pretty good. Rained hard most of the night. Flood and flash flood warnings in effect today, but it looks like the threat of severe weather has let up some.

Hope all of you survive this bout of nasty weather in fine order. Helps to remind us what's really important, eh?

The "calm before the storm"

I had a twister go through my yard last year. I was sleeping when it happened. Very scary stuff. My nieghbor was listening to a football game on his truck radio, cause the power was down. He watched it go across his drive and into my yard. Then walked over to see if I got blown away.

The storm that came thru here created a mess. I watched the small wall cloud move toward my house and develop before my eyes to something very big right over me. Kinda cool to see but VERY nerve racking at the same time. Then the grey wall of doom started moving slowly up the corn field. Probably 15 mph, everything just kept dissapearing into a grey wall. Gulp...this aint good!!

Fortunately it was just rain and hail that was so heavy I could not see my shop that is only 75' away. Luckily the hail only broke a couple windows and beat up other stuff. Then terrace overflowed wiping out a lot of my new grass and left piles of silt in and below the terrace. Probably have 10-15 hours or work to straighten things out again.

Thank God a tornado didn't drop out of it like it did at other places.
