Just picked up 1 of these in the fall.
IH 444, gas, 1150 loader with a quick attach bucket. Had new rear tires, recent full tune up, etc. None of the gauges work. In the family for yrs and yrs but owner had cancer for 2nd time and just wanted to move it as reducing equipment. Some the hydraulic hoses need replacing and matter of fact I ended up putting a hole in 1 of them.
Ran good but then couldn't get to go full throttle and weather turned bad. Soon as nicer out will try to figure out problem. Neat little tractor. Only need to move some snow, dirt and maybe some gravel. Price was ok @ $4500 cdn and came with a back blade.

None of the gauges work.

Sounds like a good deal. Wish mine had a front loader. My amp/volt and temp gauge didn't work. I just replaced my temp gauge. The wiring is a nightmare on this tractor. I'm just going to tear everything out and rewire completely. I'm going to the one wire alternator and do away with the regulator. That should simplify things. My throttle assembly has a lot of play in it before it starts to actuate the throttle on the injector pump. The linkage is good, but the play is on the rod of the throttle assembly. Will have to figure it out.

Don't forget a Canadian IH 444 is the same as an American IH 354.

Actually I didn't realize that so thanks. Will go to tractor data and look up. I have been thinking was a 444.

Coming along very well, now that you have it running and rolling would be worth changing all fluids and filters if not already done.

I don't know what the people at IH could have been thinking when they assigned numbers to their different models. It can be very confusing. I used to think the parts guys at the nearest IH dealer were extremely incompetent because when I would ask for parts for my 444 they would usually give me incorrect items. I finally twigged that their parts books and computer parts software are American and that a Canadian IH 444 is the same as an American IH 354 and NOT the same as an American IH 444! Here is a copy of a page of an I&T service manual. My Canadian 444 has the front axle shown in Fig. 2 while Joe TX's American 444 has the one shown in Fig.4.

Got it running, but hadn't tried to use the PTO with the mower until this weekend. I had put the PTO in gear and it appeared to work without the mower. Tried to use the mower this weekend and the PTO didn't engage. Messed with the gears and low/hi case and it suddenly worked when I popped it into Low. Thought I was good to go, but when I got to where I was going to mow, once more the PTO wouldn't engage. What do you think? How can I check to see if the PTO clutch needs replacing? Thanks. Joe.
