You guys didn't miss much, it's been crapping up here all morning. So far we've gotten a little freezing rain, now that wet heavy stuff which doesn't like to plow.
At least the ground froze on the places where I had cleaned the snow off.
We got freezing rain/snow on Sunday, then snow on & off all day Monday, then another 8" last night.
As for the 2 different splitters, I see positives & negatives with both. I don't have much use for equal sized pieces, that sounds too fancy and OCD to me. I like the larger pieces for nighttime when I jam the stove full. I like the smaller pieces for those warmer days with the solar gain from my windows. The vertical splitter looks comfortable to use, not bending over, just push off table to conveyor, but I don't think I want a trail of firewood to follow to get back home, it's wood not popcorn. As you are driving away, its dropping logs all over. Does it have enough oomph to pull a trailer? Or do you have to pick all those pieces back up? I think I like the concept of the 2 part trailer train that I think Mr. Gould showed in one of his videos, maybe with some modifications. Tractor pulls splitter & wood trailer to logs in woods, then split wood into a trailer holding an IBC tote, then use tractor forks to move tote? All mess stays in woods. Alternatively, I've had good luck filling the carryall with logs, then lift to comfortable height, move to splitter beam, then splits off into totes. It feels like less moving of the pieces. I also have a log arch that i tow with the atv. Works great to get the logs out of the woods fast, but its one log at a time. I have an old popup camper frame that I want to turn into a log trailer, kind of like running gear but cheaper. Then I could move logs a lot at a time, cut right on trailer then move to splitter beam, then to totes.
I guess this means that there is no "right" way to do it, you should do it the way that works best for you.
Now back to this delicious sounding homemade butter!!
