Dumb idea? LOL. You are grossly underestimating the amount of force a lower unit puts on the boat hydraulics. There are massive forces involved with high horsepower V-8 engines spinning props and smashing into waves with boats that weigh thousands of pounds. Even things like trim tabs hold large amounts of weight when in use literally holding the boat up out of the water while underway. Adjust the trim and the whole boat comes up out of the water, all that force is on the drive unit and trim tabs. The drawback is they do not move large amounts of fluid but they handle more force in some situations than holding a log on a set of forks. Think before you make comments about how dumb someone's idea is, it has a way of backfiring in some cases.I do this same thing with my grapple. Even with bigger logs. This is a prime example of why using boat trim hydraulics is a dumb idea.
