Skidded out and stacked up close to six cord of tree length today with my l3901. It was super wet out and I. Glad I had the R1 ag tires today because the tractor just chugged right through like it was nothing.

I do this same thing with my grapple. Even with bigger logs. This is a prime example of why using boat trim hydraulics is a dumb idea.

Dumb idea? LOL. You are grossly underestimating the amount of force a lower unit puts on the boat hydraulics. There are massive forces involved with high horsepower V-8 engines spinning props and smashing into waves with boats that weigh thousands of pounds. Even things like trim tabs hold large amounts of weight when in use literally holding the boat up out of the water while underway. Adjust the trim and the whole boat comes up out of the water, all that force is on the drive unit and trim tabs. The drawback is they do not move large amounts of fluid but they handle more force in some situations than holding a log on a set of forks. Think before you make comments about how dumb someone's idea is, it has a way of backfiring in some cases.

If a 1/2 inch ram was adequate, than why did grapple manufacturers use much larger cylinders?

The length of the stroke and the ability for the cylinder rod to move out of line make a big difference on strength - no idea what it is for the boat setup. I am referring to the diameter of the rod, not the diameter of the piston so I am not referring to the power of the cylinder but its ability not to get tweaked.

Grapple jaws are much longer than a trim fin on a 14' boat.

Hydraulics for high horsepower boats are bigger than 1/2" rods.

Lots of chest thumping in here and not discussing facts. The fact is that your boat pump for a little trim cylinder may very well exceed it's duty cycle trying to move a larger ram. In the end, pressure does the work and volume of fluid moved determines how fast the work is done. Boat pumps will likely disappoint in speed.

I said before I think 2 times, number 1 stern drive trim cyls are 1" piston with a 3/4" rod..Now the newer ones could have a little bigger piston I'm sure about that. I don't recall what #2 and #3 are. I do agree it's not the best set up, but it well work and not to bad for light duty work. If it doesn't do the job he wants it to do, then all he would have to do is change the cyl. Now the real old #1 drive you could get them with tilt only and no trim, and those cyls did have a smaller rod and they were SA cyls.

If you changed to a bigger cylinder that would make the already slow cycle time will be even slower.

Had a huge silver maple come down this week. Lots of work ahead cleaning up this monster.
