Definitely a pain to clean up the woodstove after though. No problem guessing how it got its name.
lol... yeah, it does leave a lot behind! I also end up having to burn a good bit of walnut, since at least half the trees on my property are walnut, and that's even worse than ash! Relatively low BTU, massive amounts of ash, but it splits even easier than ash and smells wonderful when splitting.

Smells good when it burns too... in my opinion.

I was getting pretty nervous that my firewood log-harvesting window had closed until fall, as I'm not really a fan of sweating into my eyes or getting attacked by deer flies and mosquitoes. But thankfully mother nature delivered me a nice cool memorial day weekend before the bugs have come out, and I finally had some time to commit. So I pulled my Stihl out of her long winter hibernation and got after it.

Just a gorgeous time in the woods clearing deadfall and re-opening some blocked trails.

Not quite a full winter's worth of firewood (got a bit more after this pic) but it's plenty for now. Phew! Now I can enjoy summer without the dread of inadequate firewood supply for 2026+.

To dry wood faster, drop trees now and leave the tops on through the summer.
Just until the leaves wilt and fall is sufficient.

Gallons of water can be pulled out by doing this!

Yesterday, I cut down another 100 foot tall hemlock. Well, it taped at 97 feet, but the top 20 feet broke up in impact so, call it 100" ;-) 18-20" abh. Too much for the 18" saw blade to do in one bite at the butt (24"). But it fell "Right on the pin!" (Patting my own back! I haven't lost the knack!)

We can use the bit of open sky for sure. It gets so dark at the house when the leaves come out.

Today I chipped up all the limbs and branches. Whew! What a job with just a PTO chipper/ shredder. (MacKissics )
I'm Beat! It's a good thing it's raining, as I'm not going to good for much tomorrow! Getting old sucks!

But those limbs did produce quite a pile of chips! My gardening wife will find a use for them in the years to come!
Plus, the bigger limbs were chunked into short lengths and will provide fuel for the fire place out on the deck when they dry out!

I might snap a photo before I start in on "bucking up" the main stem. It's blocking the way to the back pond, and needs to be processed onto the ever growing log pile.

I'm thinking to get an Alaskan mill.....;-)

I'm thinking to get an Alaskan mill.....;-)

Hope you do. I love to get your feedback on it. I though the same about an Alaskan mill and have even made some short free hand planks but never quite got to making or buying one.

CalG - here is another way and cheap too. If I made one it would be a unit like this but more robust.

I'm impressed with the squareness of the result. I wonder if that quality remains consistent down the entire length. I'm sure working on a quality surface with good sawpigs makes for a better job. I would think that jig is a bit flimsy for holding square. That where the sharp chain comes in, light pressure, careful guidance.

100 feet of hemlock doesn't look like much when the limbs are chipped.

Sort of like a wet cat.

Our western hemlock is purdy high in the moisture content compared to other species
