When mowing season ends I plan to use the Bolens G174 to tow a 4X6 utility trailer for woodlot duties. I'm concerned that it's a bit light in the front end for heavy loads, even with three suitcase weights, so I'm reluctant to hitch off the end of the 3 pt hitch.

Some compact tractors seem to come with an attachment point for a hitch ball, but mine has nothing except the 3 pt hitch hardware.

Is there a bolt-on part I can order to do this simple job? I want the hitch ball about 12" closer to the rear axle than the 3 pt hitch arms allow. This should allow a much better safe hitch weight on a loaded trailer, yet still allow clearance for turns.

Thanks,

The G152 that I have came with a factory hitch. It would be OK for lighter loads like a lawn cart or something. It is only perhaps 3/8 of an inch thick so it would not take a lot tongue weight.

I fabricated a hitch to use on the 3 point and it works pretty good. I made up a front weight that is about 120 lb and it did a decent job of keeping the front end down.

You could load the trailer to control tongue weight. Loads may have to be a little smaller. I would do a little trial and error, but you should be able to achieve satisfactory results using a hitch setup.

Thanks for the comment. When I looked at the rig today I realized that the rotary mower it currently carries weighs 400 pounds. Likely the hitch weight on a utility trailer wouldn't exceed that, even when loaded with firewood.

The other question is how much will the thing pull with turf tires, even in 4WD? If the mower hangs up it sits and spins until I lift and release it. Perhaps the 3pt trailer hitch would transfer needed weight to the back wheels.

I also have three suitcase weights on the front, likely about 120 pounds.

If you are going to be in any terrain other than a smooth lawn or a driveway I would remove the mower.

On smooth level ground you could probably pull a pretty good load, on hills it will be another story. The big problem is safely stopping or controlling speed down a hill.

You probably you have turf tires which are not good at all in the woods. A set of chains will make a HUGE difference for you. Still, the turf tires are soft and can puncture pretty easy so you have to be careful.

Remember that sometimes slow is fast and it is often better to make a few small loads and be safe than try and do it all at once.

I had a G172 and it was most certianly light in the front end. Guy I sold it to dumped it over on its side 3 weeks after I sold it. Suit case weights are a must in my opinion.
