On the particles removed per the ionic air cleaners, do you know what size of particles your test went to.

I don't know. Air cleanliness was really incidental to what we were doing. Back in the dark, primordial recesses of my memory, I remember some theory as to why an ionic air filter will remove small particles better than large ones, but I could be completely wrong on that.

0.3 microns is right on the very edge of what can be seen with visible light, so I suspect that was our lower limit of observation also.

That said, if a person has allergies (sp?) and you put a portable unit in the room, and if the person who has the allergies (sp?) feels better after the unit is running, bottom line is I guess the unit works.

I urge you to re-read the post about the allergies. That was done with a HEPA, not an ionic, air filter, and it was done in my home, not at work.

My opinion is that the HEPA filters are much more suitable for home use. They have an internal fan so they cover more volume. In my instance, they prevented having to make a choice between my dog & my girlfriend.

Jerry I would highly recommend the Honeywell electronic air cleaner. You'll need to give it a bath from time to time but it's been around a long time and it's very reliable. In the 7 years that I have owned mine all it has ever needed was cleaning every couple of months.

Ok after reading this thread I am reminded why I was so relieved when I quit working for NASA and moved back to Arkansas when I was younger.

I have no experience with the Trane CleanEffects but after visiting a website showing the specifications for the unit it looks as good as the Honeywell electronic air cleaner to me. Let us know how you make out if you decide to install one.

Have you checked out the Aprilaire 5000 system? It's reputed to be just as effective and efficient at removing airborne particles, easier to maintain, and it's a whole lot less expensive at under $500 (I've seen it for $469 with free shipping.) I was considering the Trane CleanEffects, but now I'm thinking of going with the Aprilaire 5000 instead.

My daughter and I suffer from all kinds of allergies. I'm assuming you are doing this for allergy relief?

I tried the furnace filters, air cleaners, air filters, stand alone units, nothing really helped her, she still took a boatload of pills and me too. We both have allergies. Also with some of them my furnace guy said they weren't letting enough air get through those filters, he had me start buying some of the cheaper thinner ones.

What I did was get rid of all the carpeting first of all, the whole house has laminate flooring. Then I have very few curtains, still have drapes in the living room but anyothers I do have are washabale. I have a vacuum from Sears that has a hepa filter and I vacuum every day to two. We have a cat in the house and have for years but luckily she doesn't react to her but a little.

Our beds have the allergy mattress covers. I only use Allergy free liquid All to do laundry with, no powdered detergents, not for dishes, clothing, or cleaning anything in the house, all liquids only. Once in awhile use comet in the bathtub but rinse thoroughly and wipe it all down with towels. We use only Dove soap.

I also took her to an allergist and they did testing. We found out what her allergy issues were and she started getting desensitized. First 3 shots twice a week, then once a week, now monthly. All this has done wonders for her but getting rid of the carpet has helped she and I the most I think. Of course, I realize this may not help everyone and we also have a few weeks in the spring and fall here in the Houston area when we still need some pills. Just saying other remedies might help for the long term.

.

You might consider a central vacuum. It dumps all exhaust outside. The HEPA will let some through. Just a thought, but don't just go by my suggestions.

We have an older house, quite a chore to put one in. If we ever build new again we likley will. But we are in pretty good shape. Since I'm retired, I have plenty of time to vaccum if I will.:)
