Trouble with Woods PTO shaft collar

Instead of grease or some high priced lube, try some candle wax.

WD-40 is fine hooking up but as the PTO implement is worked the spline connection gets hot and the WD-40 evaporates, leaving you mostly un-lubed trying to get the PTO shaft off. Eureka Fluid Film works better.

Grease is not good. Too easy to get a mass of pushed up grease preventing the last 1/8" of slip needed to connect the PTO shaft to the tractor.

Clean off the splines, male and female, occasionally with a wire brush, then wipe them clean with a rag and lube with Fluid Film.

That's a great idea!
I used to take the chain off my bicycle and soak it in a pan of melted paraffin every 2 or 3 weeks when I was riding 20 to 30 miles a day.
Made putting the bike in the car a lot less messier and since it was no longer a grit magnet the wear on the aluminum crankset sprocket was greatly reduced.
It worked great and the bike stayed clean a lot longer.

I have a couple of implements with a collar PTO shaft. One hand is trying to pull the collar back while the other hand is trying to push the PTO on the shaft. One hand is working against the other. I prefer the old push button type.

Start tractor.

Engage PTO.

Shut tractor off.

Tractor PTO shaft is now not able to rotate.

Push implement PTO coupler on tractor PTO shaft and rotate implement PTO shaft to align splines.

Pull back on coupler collar while pushing implement PTO shaft toward tractor as far as it will go.

Release the collar.

Pull the implement PTO shaft back until it locks and the collar snaps forward to lock.

+ 4 or 5 on fluid film. I lost count?

If you don't have a cover for the tractor PTO shaft for use when using PTO, get one.

Spray PTO shaft with FF after each use.

Also blow dirt / dust from the implement PTO coupling after each use and spray it with FF.

If implement is stored outside, wrap a plastic bag around the coupler to keep it clean.

Good luck!

So Fluid Film seems to be the most popular to use, thanks. Never thought of stopping the engine with the PTO on, makes sense. Monday I'm changing from the finish mower to bush hog and we'll try all these great ideas. Thanks.

I have both styles of PTO shafts and am firmly in the "button is easier" camp. I will put the tractor end of the PTO shaft on first, then attach it to my Bush Hog usually (it has the collar style shaft on the tractor end and the button on the other). Fortunately, my PHD shaft has buttons on both ends.

I have a woods model 35 post hole digger that I bought back in 2009 when I bought my Sc2400. It had the collar type connection on it. I got tired of messing with it all the time so I swapped it over to the push pin type.

A new design on a PTO locking collar doesn't necessarily mean that it is better. Maybe the same engineer that is designing our fuel cans these days.

That sounds like a good idea. The first time I put my landpride mower on it took me half hour of spitting and sputtering. I just couldn't get the splines lined up. I could hold up the shaft but I couldn't turn the tractor splines or the mower shaft to line up easily so I was stuck.

Now when I use it and need to take it off, I never touch the PTO switch again until I hook it up the next time. It slides right on in a few seconds that way. Your idea sounds like a humdinger when two implements are used on the same machine.
