My twenty year old Tray Bilt tiller will run for five minutes then it starts sounding as if it is under load, missing slightly, rpm starts varying, and it dies. It won't restart until it sits for ten minutes. Then the process starts again, run for ten minutes, then stall. Any ideas?

Have you inspected & cleaned the fuel system - if not I would do following:

Open up the carburetor and clean, replace fuel filter (if any?), remove fuel tank for cleaning up inside including any strainer or filter inside the tank at the fuel outlet.

Please note the added inline fuel filter & petcock in my old reliable 1976 Troy-Bilt Horse with original Tecumseh 6 hp engine.
I shut off the petcock after each use and run the engine at idle until it stalls.
IE. The carburetor has no more fuel.

Easy to restart every time, even if sitting unused for 6 months or longer. I always use Sta-Bil 360 Marine Ethanol fuel stabilizer.

Fuel issue.

Quick try: If it has a true choke, NOT the enrichener type, start the engine and give it a minute to warm. Then pull it wide open. Before it over revs slam the choke shut. Reopen before it flood stalls. Repeat several times.

-- You may have a water bead that has collected right under your main jet. This method will often grab it up and slurp it on through. --

It flat refused to run a couple weeks ago. I suspected water in the gas so I used starter spray in the carb to keep it running until I was sure all the water was sucked out and thru the engine. Filled it up with fresh and it worked for a few days. Then this started. Gonna drain the fuel tank first. Then try what y'all have suggested.

Any more suggestions?

IF you have the useless Tech motor on it,---which I have an 8 hp on one of mine,--the load jet swells and you have to keep opening the load needle and choke the hell out of it,-- THEN fight the too much gas deal, so reset the needle to just right and good for maybe a half hour then same thing over again. I even put on a new carb and made no difference, still gotta fight it. I dont use that tiller much since I have 13 other TB's now with Kohler's on them!

Sounds like dirt from the fuel tank is restricting fuel flow.

Needle valve under the float likely sticking. Mine did this just last week. A few gentle taps on the float bowl cleared it up til I can take it apart to clean.
