Truss for pole building question..

I think you want to use a regular common truss, set it on the edge of the pole and run your siding girts right up it for your siding.

I've never seen one made with horizontal studding, most likely you will have to nail in some blocking in between the studs. You may also want to check in with a lumber yard more geared to the professional. They will be happy to sell you the trusses & will have more knowledgable salespeople.

We just used the load bearing trusses on the gable ends. We had a single 2x12 strung on the outside of the poles on the gable ends (lined up with the double 2x12 sidewall girder) and just rested the truss on that and nailed it into the poles. Many people use tall poles in the middle of the gable endwall (or on both sides of the door) that run up to the top of the roof and they nail there trusses right up to the top cord of the truss. That provides a huge amount of bracing for the roof.

As for the trusses we just mounted some horizontal stringers in the "V"s of the truss 2' OC and toe nailed them in. You have to do it this way with the method we used because the end trusses are flush with the girts below them.

The gable end trusses won't help with metal siding.

Steve Benson, mine will be the same way as yours, the gable truss will be lined up with the girts, if the truss was set back 1 1/2" then i could just nail a girt accross the truss like on the wall..so you guys just put the horizontal girt in between the truss bracing, or did you actually nail it over the truss bracing like a girt?

I haven't put mine in yet, but they will be toenailed in between the truss bracing, if I nail mine on like a girt it would stick out past the rest of the girders on the front/back of the building as currently the truss is even with the girders. My end truss is on the outside of my poles sitting on my 2X12's on the end. BTW, I did use the tall poles in the center to attach my end truss to.

Mine too. I toenailed girts in between the truss bracing with the trusses nailed to the outside of the poles (flush with the lower girts).

I found a picture:

Guys trust me I know trusses been doing them for over 20 years (boyI am getting old)
anyhow the people a big chain stores are nothing more than "order takers" from the most part. Think about it how many chain store can you go in a say I want anything and not have to see 3 people because they don't know anything about building

Horz, vert, at an angle with a vent opening ,it does not matter go to the truss plant tell them what you want. how you are going to sheet it bearing types. ect They can build what you want cheeper than you can add it......and they will get the loading on the trusses right. Did the guy at lowes say they were for a pole barn or just X number of commons and two gables?

If the barn is open there is a lot more load on the trusses because it in like a airplane wing. Did lowes quote open or closed.

Did lowes tell you what to do for purlins? Don't put them between the trusses with hangers nail them to the top. We call the one between the trusses "KILLER CLEATS" it makes for a very unstble roof system. many people have got killed using them.

Chucko....... I worked in a truss factory 45 years ago when they were the up and coming thing. Back then, we would hand nail the plates to the wood. Your post brought back some of the things that I had learned back then, but one thing hasn't changed. Many people think that because a place sells a product that they know all about that product. This is as far from the truth as can be. The people in the box stores many times are nothing but order takers and have never handled a truss except to take it off one truck and put it on another. You have given him good advise, but like horses, you can only lead him to water, but you can't make him drink. Going directly to the manufacturer and explaining what you intend to do is the best way to resolve this issue. If the trusses fail because of poor design or installation, he will have no one to turn to except himself. A properly designed and installed truss will withstand the test of time.... You can buy vegetables based on price, but when it comes to building materials, there is more than price that needs to be considered. When price is the first concern, and many times the only concern, many things such as safety are sacrificed, and disaster looms in the future.
