Under cabinet water filter recs please

We have a couple water coolers and my wife thinks they need filtered water so I have been buying and hauling home 5 gallon bottles of filtered water. Today I tried 2 places to get the filtered water and the machines were not working. GRRR. Anyway, I am sick of buying water when our water is perfectly good. It tastes great and smells great. I have it tested regularly and it always tests great. It may be a little too hard for the water coolers though. So I am looking for some type of under sink water filter recs. Something that is easy to service and install. Thanks for reading and for any recommendations.

If the water tastes great and smells great, what are you trying to filter out?

Water cooler as in cools and heats water from two little taps? Almost nobody that I know cleans and sterilizes the 5 gallon water dispensers, which is pretty crazy in my book.

If you want to go the RO route, Watts or APEC are the main makers of quality units, and they can be plumbed so that the water isn't exposed to dirt, dust, and bugs.

I have this whole house system in the laundry room where the water line enters the house. My water isn’t exceptionally hard so I use a carbon filter after the sediment filter.

That would be more like a water softener than a filter. If it were me, I would run the softened water into an RO system. Running raw water into deionizers is pricey expensive to operate. You can price them out easily on the web. E.g.

If you have had the water tested recently, you should have the results that might help you settle on what, and how much, you would need to remove.

How hard is the water? Lime scale in the shower? Laundry challenges? Issues with toilets? There's hard water, and then there's hard water. Some is much harder than others.

If there isn't much mineral, the cheap and low hassle option might be to just clean and acid wash the water coolers regularly with a cleaning agent that they can tolerate, or have someone deliver water for you. I know that's not exactly what you were asking for, but to truly remove calcium is more than a filter.

The coolers work fine. They just don't like hard water.

I had a single stage GE filter under my sink for years. Seemed to work pretty well. I had the one with the stand alone filter that twists onto the housing. No fuss no muss! It seems like they have gotten a little pricier. I swear I only paid like $35 for mine, I just looked and now they are $70. The filters aren't cheap, but not too bad either and they last 6 months. You could probably stretch that out a couple of months if its just a water cooler tap.
