Once again tractor rollover claims young life of 3 year old: A lady in Altoona Pennsylvania was on a riding lawn mower with her 3 year old son, when she rolled it over becoming pinned under the tractor for 20 minutes. Her husband came home to find his wife and son pinned and proceeded to roll the tractor off mother and son. The 3 year old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Its a shame that people continue to entertain children with potentially life threatening equipment. Particularly when many of these kids do not know, nor understand the risks invloved in operating such equipment. Particularly disturbing is these young children look up to us for protection and the assumption that we "KNOW" what we are doing to ensure their saftey.
NO SECOND CHANCES for this young boy.

The only way the kids (nieces & nephews) get a ride on my tractor is by riding in the trailer with my wife with them when we go to gather sticks before mowing. This is done only on the very flat sections of the property. They know they are not allowed to ride in the operators station. So sorry to hear of the little tot. These things happen so fast you can't believe it.

That's why i don't let my wife mow... 1, I've seen her drive, and 2, she also would not be strong to get the mower off her if it rolled on her...

Never, and I mean never let a child ride with you on a mower or tractor. I don't care that we all grew up riding with Dad or Grandpa and lived to tell about it.Yes,I did.

Here are a few cases.

My Dad fell off a tractor when he was young and was run over. He was lucky to escape without serious injury.

One of my Wife's best friends lot and arm when she was young when she fell off the mower while riding with her Dad and was run over.

A fellow I know was riding his Grandson on a tractor when the boy fell off and he ran over him and killed him.

Dad grew up on a farm so we are not just city boys moved to the country.

Teach kids safety and when they are old enough, teach them proper tractor operation.

Jsut cause we got away with it does not make it safe.

We did'nt have seat belts when I was little either and Mom just held on to me.

Would not do that now.

Just my .02 worth....

This is a tough one for me. My two year old son goes ballistic if I don't give him a ride on my lawn mower. I don't mow with him but I do give him an occasional ride to calm him down. I can't imagine the scenario for him falling out of my arms and getting run over by my little JD mower.

He also loves my Kubota tractor. I will let him sit on it when it is not running but that is about it. I always have to take the pressure out of the hydraulics by letting the buckets down etc.. More than once he has run over to it and started climbing up before we can get to him. This is what scares me more than anything. Unfortunately I can't find a place for it that is out of site.

I'm about to sound like a miserable SOB...

You don't need to hide your tractor. You need to train your son. If any of my kids went ballistic over being told they couldn't have what they want, they would get a solid smack. No, I don't abuse my kids. I take care of them and protect them from harm.

My kids are pretty much grown now. They are reasonably functional members of society. They also know how to operate equipment safely and fend for themselves. I believe I've done right by them.

Please teach your son that he doesn't get what he wants by terrorising his parents.

I agree with Defective and there is another way to handle it too. Get him his own pedal tractor, "just like Daddy's". He'll latch on to that instead, especially if you show him how it does the same things. I have a 3yo daughter who is allowed to sit on the real tractor when the engine is off but she knows she's not allowed near it when the engine is on.

I have to agree. Making the world child proof is alot harder than just making the child world safe, thru education and -constant- parenting.
