I just had another adventure with the utility locate gawds, fickle things.

The number one rule to remember when dealing with buried utilities is that you are guilty and will never be proven innocent. If there's a doubt in your mind consider all the bad things that have happened recently in corporate America and how many of them involved public utilities. Now think about how many were punished appropriately.

If they can get away with that what chance do you think you have against them. They made sure the laws were written for their benefit.

I called in to DIGTESS, official State of Texas locator service, the twenty sixth of May for utility locates because I wanted to start digging post holes the twenty ninth.

I was involved in IronFest from the twenty ninth thru the first of June. Second of June I still didn't have Verizon and the local electric co-op located. Verizon was an inconvenience but the electric co-op involved a line crisscrossing the fence line with fourteen thousand four hundred volts just wanting a meaningful relationship with Iris and me.

While I was away at lunch the third co-op's locator came in and did one half way sorry locate. I called in when I got back and had one snot slinging fit. It was a genuine bugger blaster.

The request called for a total property locate, two secondarys, one primary. He'd missed one secondary and the primary, fourteen thousand lonely volts wanting to dance, he'd marked with a flag every thirty feet or so.

About the third person I talked to at the co-op informed me that their locator had made a mistake. I counter explained that I knew about mistakes, made them all the time. This wasn't a mistake. This was someone not understanding the gravity of the situation (my butt) and not giving a hoot about doing their job. We agreed a supervisor should show up at my location the next day.

Here's the original locate. Please note all the non existing flags and paint. We're only dealing with fourteen thousand plus volts.

This is after the meeting with the supervisors. Two of them showed up to see just what the problem was all about.

I guess they get complaints all the time. When they first got out of the truck I was their concern. About five minutes later it wasn't me that they were worried about. They had two problems, my sorry locate and I'm sure the employee was now number one on their to do list.

Here's after another crew came into locate the same area a couple of hours later.

Those white crosses are where I'd like to place posts, their locates willing.

I always give them my preferred post marks. And I always want not only flags but paint. I also usually take pictures before I start to dig.

The laws are written so that the excavator is always responsible. The markings are a courtesy. So grab a cover for your backside and keep it close. I take pictures. I'm very careful. And I understand that if I hit something chances are I'm going to have to pay.

I've never had to pay, touch wood. I have hit things. But it seems a little professionalism goes a long long way.

If you have pictures and you are careful but you hit something then you have something to help you show that you are not at fault.

I've said it here before, respect. When you treat their property, the easement and buried plant, with respect they will usually appreciate it and give you some slack if something bad happens.

Do not assume that their plant is directly under that flag or paint. There is a margin of error. Assume their stuff is in the area and treat it accordingly.

In this picture my original post mark was within inches of their paint. At first I moved my post mark. Then I used a little mind's eye and invisioned what eight foot apart posts would look like if suddenly there was a seven foot space followed by a nine foot one.

I know they are three feet deep by law, secondary power. I also know my auger and the soil.

Facing a sorry looking fence, screwed post spacing, or a little extra work I chose digging right on top of them.

But look close please.

I angled the auger away from the power locate. I put the auger in idle and went down so carefully that an ant walking on my ear would have been like two elephants dancing.

I stopped at about thirty inches. Then I cut off the side taking down the hole where I wanted it with hand diggers, carefully. My diggers are all steel, heavy, and have an attitude about dirt and don't like plastic anything. They've been known to attack quarts of oil riding in the back of the truck with them.

I didn't find the electrical conduit. That means the locate is off. It just so happens that on this day my mouth-holding-good-luck prevailed and they were off in the other direction. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I make light of the issue but it is deadly serious. If I had not got a locate and I had just nailed it balls to the wall and went into two hundred and thirty volts with the auger all kinds of bad things could have had happened, bad bad things.

What is that on Iris' hat? I've heard of avoiding dehydration, but do you have a direct feed from that tank to you? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
