With the exception of the engine model, I'm pretty sure my '96 Cub Cadet 7274 is the same Mitsubishi built tractor as your Mahindra 2816. In 2000 hours, I have never had any issue like you described.
After the way this issue started, your guess seems as good as any. If the clutch is the same as my Cub Cadet, it is a two stage, fully depressed activates the PTO clutch.
Were you in 4WD? Was the noise right under your feet or could it have come from the front end? I have broken parts in the front drive swivel joints and had noises like that.

...a popping/grinding noise starts and I'm not even pressing the clutch. You could tell that it effected the engine RPM. I immediatetly stopped and put in neutral and it quit.
