So be glad a Son in law can get it fixed. ken[/QUOTE said:

Ken, I bought a Microsoft 4000 mouse and my son-in-law set it to disable the touch pad when the mouse is plugged and turned on.

I have a brother who says he loves Windows 8 on his laptop; just wishes he'd bought the touch screen model, which he did just buy as a birthday gift for his granddaughter who will soon be going to college. My son-in-law says that way you always have a messy, greasy screen. So, as with many things, I reckon it just comes down to personal preference.

Personally, I'm inclined to agree with AlanL.
I used an android tablet and my win8 phone for a long time. Both touch, obviously.. When I went back to my laptop, I found myself touching the darn screen constantly :) Now I wish I had actually bought a new one with touch. Very convenient.

Three years ago I laid out $1500 for a factory refurbished MacBook Pro. Never looked back. Effortless computing, virus free. Illuminated keyboard. Mac OS X is an excellent alternative to Windows 8.

Thanks All for the information will recheck on getting the number.

Maybe my touch pad is o'k even with the M/S 4000 mouse the little arrow has a twitch also. Just like my drawing a line with a pencil looks like a earth quake read out on the chart.

I am 75 and i can't seem to make it work. After a while I finally am able to make it work somewhat but my main problem then is in a week I forgot it all. However its on my wifes laptop and she seems to have found out the secret and is quite (almost) happy with it. Seems like the younger generation adapts to it usd old farts tend to adapt more easily to older stuff like window 95

Just curious -- what are the problems with Windows 8?

Ken,
If I am understanding your comments......
The *** *** **** should have been the last 4 digits of your cell or landline number. You choose one of these or a text message to receive the code back from Microsoft.
If you went to the taskbar in desktop mode and right clicked on it, then choosing properties and the Navigation tab; then ticked on the box that says "Open in Desktop view when signing in" don't forget to click the "Apply" box and then reboot, for it to stay in that setup.
If your mouse is twitching go into the mouse driver controls and adjust the speed or movement.
Your touchpad should be off when the mouse is plugged in.

IA leave my pad on when the mouse is in.. that way if I just pick up the laptop and go, it still works without having to remove, then lose, the usb receiver.. I type with my palms on either side of the pad, so no big deal.

2 things I do:
1. Order laptops with Bluetooth (no receiver to lose, mice are about the same price and there are a lot of other uses for bluetooth)
2. Most trackpad software has an option to shut the trackpad off for x seconds after the keyboard is used. Saves on a lot of unwanted mouse moments that way.
